If The Orville returns, they may follow the same path as crime-thriller series Dexter
As a die-hard Star Trek fan who’s spent countless hours navigating the final frontier of sci-fi television, I can confidently say that The Orville has been an absolute delightful addition to my galactic journey. Despite its humble beginnings as a comedic spin-off, it quickly morphed into a worthy successor to the Star Trek legacy, albeit with a dash of humor here and there.
Among shows that complement Star Trek enthusiasts, The Orville stands out as one of the best. Initially designed as a humorous spin-off of Star Trek, it transformed over time into a series reminiscent of ’90s Star Trek, albeit with a touch of humor. It debuted in 2017, but since then, only three seasons have been released, with the latest being in 2022, leaving fans eagerly waiting for more.
A fourth season could very well be on the cards, and we’re all eagerly waiting for it. However, with Adrianne Palicki deciding to part ways after season three, it looks like The Orville is poised to embark on a fresh chapter if it comes back. Due to the slow pace of filming, which made it difficult for her and her colleagues to secure other roles, Palicki chose to leave the show.
Halston Sage wasn’t the only original cast member to depart during season two, and with the sad passing of Norm Macdonald, we’ve lost three members from the initial crew. It seems that more may follow, which suggests a new phase is approaching for sure.
The Orville has faced similar situations in the past. After Fox declined a third season, they moved to Hulu and transformed themselves for their premiere on the streaming platform. The debut of the third season marked the series as The Orville: New Horizons, demonstrating their knack for adjusting to changing times and the franchise’s course.
There’s a strong possibility that a fourth season could have a fresh title. This trend is becoming increasingly common with television shows. A prime example is the Paramount/Showtime series, Dexter. Following an eight-season run, it made a comeback for a ninth season titled “Dexter: New Blood”. The revival was successful enough to initiate a prequel series called “Dexter: Original Sin” and another season of the original show, which will be called “Dexter: Resurrection”.
If The Orville gets a fourth season, it might adopt a fresh subtitle, much like Dexter does, to generate anticipation for something distinct from the previous seasons. This way, fans can have unique expectations for The Orville’s fourth season compared to the first three.
