LA Knight is the man to rebuild the SmackDown midcard

As a long-time wrestling enthusiast who has seen countless title changes and shifts in the WWE landscape, I must say that LA Knight’s reign as the United States Champion feels like a breath of fresh air. For too long, the US Title has been stuck in a rut, but with Knight at the helm, it finally seems to be regaining its former glory.

In recent times, the United States Championship hasn’t seemed significantly important since Seth Rollins claimed it from Bobby Lashley in November 2022, with some arguing this was the case even earlier. When Austin Theory won the title, it became clear that WWE aimed to create a new top villain for the future. However, this strategy didn’t resonate as intended, and despite holding the title for 257 days in his second reign before losing it to Rey Mysterio, the championship never carried the weight of importance.

Previously, the title seemed incomplete with Damian Priest, Finn Balor, Sheamus, and Mysterio holding it, but something was lacking. However, once Mysterio passed the title to Logan Paul, it appeared even less impressive, lasting 273 days. Now, it seems like the title finally has what it needs. Though these wrestlers are all talented and have captivating characters, there was a void that needed filling – and that void has now been filled.

As an advocate for organic growth, it is tough to argue against how much LA Knight has elevated his superstar status in the wrestling world over the past couple years. While Raw was trying their hardest to rebuild the US Championship, Knight was being called up the main roster as Max Dupri as the leader of the Maximum Male Models — yes, I tried to forget this, but you can’t appreciate the development Knight has showcased in order to escape that dreadful period during his WWE career. He has completely recuperated himself, and in two years’ time become one of the top babyfaces in the company.

For quite a while now, the WWE fan base has been vocal about their admiration for Knight, expressing their hope that he would emerge victorious at the Royal Rumble. Last year, when Damian Priest grabbed the Money In The Bank briefcase in London, there was a sense of disillusionment among fans who felt it should have been Knight’s moment. Given his intense rivalry with the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, and falling short in that challenge, many believed Knight’s time had come. However, for some unknown reason, WWE creative seemed to distance themselves from Knight. Despite this, he managed to maintain his momentum, as each time his music played, the crowd would erupt with excitement and join in with their “Yeah” cheers.

It has been a long time coming, and after having such a hated champion in Paul, Knight is the perfect man to help rebuild the legacy and prestige of the midcard title scene on Smackdown. Whether you believe he is a carb and copy of The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, one can’t argue the fact that he is a megastar. This is also a great way to prepare him for when he wins the WWE title and is relied upon to carry a brand. After it is all said and done, Knight’s current reign as the United States Champion should have everybody saying, “LA KNIGHT, yeah!”
