13 best Blumhouse horror movies to stream right now

As a connoisseur of chills and thrills, I must say that the horror genre has always held a special place in my heart (or should I say, nightmares?). From the spine-tingling suspense of Hitchcock to the modern masterpieces produced by Blumhouse Productions, there’s nothing quite like being scared silly on a dark and stormy night.


In terms of terrifying cinema, a handful of production studios have earned renown for their top-tier horror productions. Among them, A24 stands out, with Blumhouse Productions not far behind.

Established in 2000 by Jason Blum and Amy Israel, who initially named it Blum Israel Productions, is the film company known as Blumhouse. Renowned for producing chilling horror movies like the Paranormal Activity series, the Insidious franchise, The Purge series, the modern Halloween franchise (from 2018 to 2022), and many more spine-tingling productions.

The Black Phone (2022)

In simpler terms, “The Black Phone” is a supernatural horror movie directed by Scott Derrickson, with a screenplay he co-wrote with C. Robert Cargill. The story revolves around a 13-year-old boy named Finney who gets kidnapped by a notorious local serial killer called “The Grabber” and is subsequently confined in his soundproof basement.

In my quest for freedom, I stumble upon an antique rotary phone that mysteriously connects me with the spirits of The Grabber’s past victims. With their guidance, I strive to outsmart my captor and make a daring escape. Keep your eyes peeled for the next installment, The Black Phone 2, slated for a grand cinema debut on October 17, 2025.

M3GAN (2022)

  • Cast: Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Jenna Davis, Amie Donald

In a standout performance among 2022 horror films, the movie M3GAN is a chilling blend of science fiction and terror. Directed by Gerard Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper, this film tells the story of a robotics engineer, Gemma, who gives her grieving niece Cady an extremely advanced AI doll called M3GAN as a comfort gift following their parents’ untimely demise.

While that is the case initially, things take a dark turn when M3GAN starts to become increasingly overprotective of Cady and violent toward others, eliminating anyone she sees as a threat. Now, it’s up to Gemma to put a stop to M3GAN before it’s too late. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is currently in the works and will hit theaters on June 27, 2025.

Totally Killer (2023)

This movie titled “Totally Killer” is both a thrilling slasher and a humorous horror-comedy. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, it was jointly scripted by David Matalon, Sasha Perl-Raver, and Jen D’Angelo. The plot revolves around a 17-year-old girl named Jamie who, by an accidental time slip, finds herself in the year 1987. Determined to prevent tragedy, she sets out on a mission to halt a notorious killer, famously known as the “Sweet Sixteen Killer,” from embarking on his first killing spree that ultimately took her mother’s life.

Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023)

  • Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson, Matthew Lillard

Drawing inspiration from the widely recognized video game series titled “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” created by Scott Cawthon, the story revolves around Mike Schmidt, a security guard grappling with personal issues, who takes on a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, an old-time family entertainment center that used to be bustling. On his very first night, Mike encounters a chilling revelation: the animatronic mascots at this pizzeria spring to life after midnight and they are far from friendly.

Later on, he uncovers that they are under the control of vengeful ghosts of children who met their end at the restaurant. With lethal robotic characters chasing him, Mike is forced to take every precaution and defend himself against their attacks in order to stay alive. A follow-up titled “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” is under production and set for a theater release on Dec. 5, 2025.

Happy Death Day (2017)

In a different turn of events by Blumhouse Productions, we have “Happy Death Day,” a blend of terror and humor. The story revolves around a college student named Tree Gelbman who, on the occasion of her birthday, encounters a masked assassin and ends up being murdered. However, instead of meeting her demise for good, she discovers she’s been granted a strange gift – reliving the day of her murder repeatedly. Despite finding this situation peculiar, Tree carries on with her day while attempting to dodge the killer. Unfortunately, her strategies fail, and she meets her end once more at the hands of the masked figure.

After finding herself back in the same bed again, she understands that she’s stuck in a repeating sequence of events. With a firm resolve to escape this cycle, she collects hints each time the day resets, aiming to uncover the identity of her assailant and finally put an end to the loop forever.

The Invisible Man (2020)

  • Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer, Michael Dorman, Oliver Jackson-Cohen
  • Where to stream: Freevee

The ‘Invisible Man’ is a science fiction horror movie, which is an adaptation from the 1897 novel with the same title by H. G. Wells. This film is also a modern take on the original 1933 movie bearing the same name. The plot centers around a woman named Cecilia Kass who encounters a sequence of mysterious occurrences following the news that her ex-boyfriend, Adrian, has apparently taken his own life.

Based on these occurrences, she starts to think Adrian might be living on, using some means to remain hidden yet persist in troubling her. Yet, people don’t seem to support her theories. As a result, she decides to act independently and put an end to his actions by herself.
