Emily Maitlis reveals request from Prince Andrew after notorious Newsnight interview had finished - and how it haunted her career ahead of A Very Royal Scandal's launch

As a seasoned journalist with years of experience under my belt, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming series “A Very Royal Scandal” on Amazon MGM Studios. This time, the focus is not on Prince Andrew, but on Emily Maitlis, who serves as an executive producer for the show.

Emily Maitlis has disclosed an uncomfortable demand made by Prince Andrew following the conclusion of their well-known Newsnight interview.

In the new Amazon Prime Video series, A Very Royal Scandal, the journalist will take up the role of an executive producer, re-enacting the events surrounding the 2019 interview.

The interview was widely branded a ‘car crash’ for the Duke of York, but Emily has now revealed that he actually wanted to spend more time during the chat on sweating and Pizza Express-gate.

As a die-hard admirer, let me share that the captivating Emily, brilliantly played by Ruth Wilson, disclosed an intriguing aspect of her life post our mesmerizing interview – the unexpected ripple effects it had on her professional journey.

After our conversation ended, she mentioned politely, “May I know if there are any points we missed during the interview that you’d like to address?” To which Prince Andrew replied, “Indeed, there were a couple of aspects left unmentioned. You omitted my alibi.

‘He wanted to talk about the fact that he’d been at Pizza Express on the night in question.

At that point, we found ourselves in a rather tricky situation since, on one side, I realized that if he discussed certain matters such as his sweating and the Pizza Express alibi, they wouldn’t improve his situation; instead, they might even worsen it.

Emily commented: “I felt a balance between ensuring he wasn’t walking into something potentially harmful, and at the same time, it was important to me to address the points he considered significant.

The presenter of the news show later disclosed that it became harder to secure interviews due to its intimidating effect on potential interviewees.

She noted that it might seem logical to assume that having conducted an interview before and gained recognition would make it simpler for her to secure more interviews.

On the contrary, it seems that no one is eager to conduct an interview with you, as they have already watched your interview and learned about you.

‘So, I think it’s slightly double-edged. Some people come towards you, and some run a mile.’

On Monday, Emily went to the London showing of the Prime Video drama, where she was joined by Ruth, the actress portraying the journalist in the adaptation.

On Monday, the duo graced the red carpet at Ham Yard Hotel in London for a unique showing of the drama, accompanied by actor Michael Sheen, who plays the role of the Duke of York.

At the screening, Ruth was elegantly dressed in a deep black midi-dress that had an eye-catching neckline and bold spiked shoulder straps.

Meanwhile Emily was sparkling in a fully-sequined red high-necked, cap-sleeved gown.

Additionally present at the screening was Welsh actor Michael, aged 55, who is set to portray the prince during the fateful interview.

Michael looked dapper in a navy suit and white shirt as he posed alongside his co-star Ruth.

Here’s my take:

Set to retell the story of Prince Andrew’s ‘car crash’ interview the dramatisation stars Michael as the Duke of York and Ruth as journalist Emily.

Beginning on September 19th, you’ll be able to watch the three-part series only on Amazon Prime Video in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Five months ago, a competitor’s streaming platform (Netflix) released its version, available from April 5.

In the preview, character Emily, portrayed by Wilson, is shown chasing a tale that could catapult her into international fame and tarnish the Prince’s image during a crucial juncture in British history.

Before the interview, the Duke of York quips: ‘I’m going to blow this out of the water.’

He adds in a voiceover: ‘I’ve been warned about you. You have a bit of a reputation.’

Emily then cheekily responds, while sitting across from him: ‘Well, for you, I’ll try and behave.’

The scene transitions to the interview and its following moments, during which Emily expresses: ‘All I wanted was to pose the correct queries.’

In the forthcoming series produced by Amazon MGM Studios, there will be a significant emphasis on the character of Emily, who holds the position of an executive producer, in contrast to Netflix’s Scoop which primarily centered around Prince Andrew.

An Amazon representative has verified that the upcoming series will trace Emily Maitlis’ career and private life as a Newsnight journalist, culminating in her renowned interview with Prince Andrew.

The press release stated: ‘The series “A Very Royal Scandal” focuses on events surrounding Emily and Prince Andrew prior to the interview, the historic interview itself, and the significant aftermath that would reshape their lives permanently.’

In the initial broadcast, I, a devoted supporter, find myself in a challenging situation as Prince Andrew endeavors to clear his name amidst an expansive global controversy. Meanwhile, Newsnight’s diligent host, Emily, leaves no stone unturned in her pursuit of securing a sit-down with him for the program.

In the second part, the interview presents unexpected turns and twists, making it unlike anything Emily or the Newsnight crew anticipated.

Ultimately, in the third installment, Prince Andrew must handle the consequences personally, for his family, and the Royal enterprise, while Emily weighs her standing and the trajectory of her professional life regarding the potential impact on her reputation.
