Univision news anchor Jorge Ramos will exit network at the end of the year

As a long-time follower of Spanish-language TV and a passionate advocate for journalistic integrity, I find myself deeply saddened by Jorge Ramos’ departure from Univision at the end of this year. With over four decades spent anchoring Noticiero Univision and Al Punto, his influence has been nothing short of monumental, mirroring the esteemed Walter Cronkite during his tenure at CBS.

At the close of this year, well-known journalist Jorge Ramos, who has been a familiar face on Spanish-language television screens across the U.S. for quite some time, will be leaving Univision.

TelevisaUnivision announced on Monday that they and anchor, Ramos, have mutually decided not to extend his contract. (or) In a statement issued on Monday, TelevisaUnivision confirmed that they and Ramos had mutually agreed not to renew his contract.

As a passionate cinemaphile, I’ve had the privilege of gracing the screens of “Noticiero Univision” for an impressive 38 years. My impact on U.S. Spanish-speaking audiences has been likened to that of Walter Cronkite during his extensive career at CBS – a comparison that truly humbles me.

Ramos also served as moderator of “Al Punto,” Univision’s Sunday morning public affairs program.

In his statement, Ramos clarified, “This isn’t goodbye.” He explained that he will remain as the anchor for ‘Noticiero Univision’ until December. Afterwards, he plans to disclose his future professional endeavors. Ramos expressed profound gratitude for the past four decades at Univision and takes great pride in being part of a team that has built strong leadership throughout the years.

Ramos is set to be the second significant personality to leave Univision’s news sector since it was acquired by Grupo Televisa from Mexico. Leon Krauze, who hosted Univision’s late-night news program starting in 2022, departed the network last November due to dissatisfaction in the newsroom over a gentle interview with former President Trump conducted by a journalist from Televisa.

Early on in his professional journey, Ramos was employed by Grupo Televisa, contributing to a talk show. However, he parted ways with the company following instances where his superiors suppressed interviews that were unfavorable towards Mexico’s political structure, as he shared with a reporter.

Throughout his professional journey, Ramos primarily concentrated on immigration matters pertaining to the U.S.-Mexico border. Candidates could always rely on him to scrutinize their proposals regarding this topic. Notably, he had contentious exchanges with the former President Trump over this subject, particularly when Trump was vying for the 2016 Republican nomination.

At a 2015 press conference in Iowa, Trump declined to acknowledge Ramos when it was his turn to ask questions. However, Ramos persisted, choosing not to step down, and instead queried Trump about his plans for constructing a border wall and deporting undocumented immigrants.

Following Trump’s comment to send Ramos back to Univision, a security officer escorted the reporter out of the room instead.

At the press conference, Ramos was reinstated following a challenge from two journalists who questioned Trump about his decision to exclude the top American Latino journalist from the event.

In 2019, Ramos functioned as the moderator for multiple presidential primary debates, with one of these debates being organized by ABC News.
