Kathy Bates eyes retirement from acting after ‘Matlock’ reboot: ‘This is my last dance’
As a movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood over the past few decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia upon hearing that Kathy Bates is preparing to retire from acting. Her career, spanning several decades and encompassing iconic roles in films like “Misery,” “Titanic,” and “American Horror Story,” has been nothing short of spectacular.
Kathy Bates is ready to leave Hollywood behind — after one last hoorah.
Acting legend Bates, who has garnered an Oscar and multiple Emmys over her long career, has hinted at her upcoming retirement. In a recent chat, she shared that her role in CBS’s revival of “Matlock,” the Andy Griffith procedural, will likely be her last screen appearance.
“This is my last dance,” Bates told the New York Times in an interview published Sunday.
In a fresh turn of events for the 76-year-old actress from “Harry’s Law”, Andrea Bates now plays Matty Matlock in the TV series “Matlock”. CBS portrays Matty as an intelligent senior, who has entered a new phase of her career by joining a distinguished law firm. At this prestigious firm, her understated manner and cunning strategies help her secure victories in court.
Despite speculation that “Matlock” might signify the close of Bates’ acting career, the Memphis-born star mentioned she had been considering retirement before the reboot occurred. In an interview with The New York Times, Bates revealed her intention to leave acting after a filming incident left her feeling disillusioned. Just a day following the filming of the unnamed project, Bates reportedly contacted her agents to announce her decision to retire.
Then, in January, she received the scripts for the “Matlock” reboot.
Bates, one of the executive producers for “Matlock,” views the show as a platform to demonstrate abilities she’s developed throughout her professional journey. She has also been involved in movies like “Titanic” and “Fried Green Tomatoes,” and made appearances on TV shows such as “The Office” and “Two and a Half Men.
She remarked, “All the prayers, efforts, and struggles I’ve endured to get where I am, I’m now being asked to utilize them all.” After that, she expressed, “It’s overwhelming.
In The Times’ fall preview, columnist Mary McNamara wrote that “Matlock” “is a showcase for Bates.”
“I think we can all agree that she is always worth showcasing,” she wrote.
On September 22nd, 8 PM, you can catch the debut of ‘Matlock’ on CBS. This series is produced by showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, with Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis also starring in it.
