Green Day rushed offstage due to rogue drone, flyer being investigated by feds
As a long-time fan of Green Day who’s seen them perform countless times, I must say that this incident in Detroit was truly unprecedented. It’s not every day you see a drone crashing a punk rock concert! Yet, even amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Billie Joe Armstrong and the band handled it with the grace and professionalism they’ve always been known for.
This week at their Detroit concert, Green Day unexpectedly left the stage, and officials are currently looking into the individual reportedly responsible for the disruption.
During our live rendition of “Longview,” an unexpected event transpired. Ten minutes passed before we continued, with no word as to what had happened. As a die-hard moviegoer and music enthusiast, I found myself gripped by the unfolding mystery on stage that night.
The incident was later verified by Detroit police as being caused when a man operated an unapproved drone within Comerica Park.
Billie Joe Armstrong addressed the audience by saying they would continue from where they had previously stopped, and he kindly requested that everyone put aside their mobile devices.
After the show ended, Green Day took to social media to express their apologies for the unanticipated hold-up.
Originally, it was stated that “The stadium security team asked us to vacate the stage as they handled a possible safety concern.” However, this message has been removed. The Dallas Police Department swiftly addressed the issue, allowing us to carry on. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
On Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported that the drone operator was interrogated but not detained, as stated by Sergeant Daron Zhou of the Detroit Police Department. Now, the matter is being transferred to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for investigation, since they handle all cases concerning potentially dangerous drone activities.
An agent representative stated that although they cannot instigate criminal proceedings, operators of drones who pose a threat to other aircraft or individuals on the ground may incur fines greater than $30,000. Furthermore, the Federal Aviation Administration has the authority to temporarily or permanently revoke drone pilots’ licenses.
Green Day’s Saviors tour, which shares its name with their 14th studio album, is commemorating the 20th and 30th birthdays of their iconic albums “American Idiot” and “Dookie.” On every stop of the tour, the band will perform both albums in full.
On September 14th, the tour will touch down at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium, with the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas joining as special performers.
