ParalympicsGB continues to have medal-winning fun on second Friday in France
As a seasoned gamer who has lived through the highs and lows of sports and gaming alike, I can confidently say that the performances of Team Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games have been nothing short of extraordinary. The sheer determination, grit, and skill displayed by these athletes have left me in awe.
After the sensational victories by Team Great Britain during the recent Paris 2024 Paralympic Games last weekend, everyone is eagerly anticipating more thrilling performances from these remarkable athletes. Indeed, ParalympicsGB not only lived up to but surpassed expectations, with their medal count now reaching a milestone of 100. Let’s explore what unfolded on September 6.
The 30th Storey medal

Sarah Storey, who excels in both swimming and cycling, secured a close win today in the women’s C4-5 road race. This triumph, over Heidi Gaugain of France and Paula Andrea Ossa Veloza of Colombia, adds to her impressive collection – marking her 19th gold medal across nine Paralympic Games, and her 30th overall medal.
According to a report on HuffPost.com, the 46-year-old Paralympian expressed her joy by saying she was “thrilled” upon reaching the finish line. Later, she spoke about the immense exertion involved in her final push.
Heidi Gaugain attacked with a lap and a half to go. Fortunately I speak a bit of French so I understood what she was told. So I was ready to attack with her.
Two days ago, I claimed another triumph – my 18th Paralympic gold medal in the C5 individual time trial. What a ride it’s been!
Unwin and Holl take home gold gold
Simultaneously, another duo of cyclists clinched victory in the Women’s B Road Race. According to the BBC, Sophie Unwin bagged her fourth medal at the Games, this time with her co-pilot Jenny Holl. This marked their second gold win within the past five days.
In a narrow 3-second lead, they crossed the finish line before Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy and her pilot Linda Kelly. Approximately 95 seconds after that, another pair from Team Great Britain, Fachie and Hall, claimed the bronze medal in the same event.
A gold eclipse
In 2021, ParalympicsGB amassed a total of 41 gold medals from their collection of 124 medals. However, this record has been broken in Paris this year by wheelchair fencer Dimitri Coutya, who clinched Team Great Britain’s 42nd gold medal in the men’s epee B event.
16 medals were awarded on Friday, and 6 of them were gold. Poppy Maskill earned her third gold medal in the women’s S14 100m backstroke, while Ben Sandilands claimed victory in the men’s T200 1500m event to take home the gold.

Following his world record-breaking win and triumphant race finish, Sandiland took time to assist any fellow athletes who were yet to rise. It wasn’t until they were all up that he celebrated his historic victory grandly.
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid achieved their dream of winning a gold medal in men’s wheelchair tennis doubles at the Paralympics. After losing in the finals in two previous games, they had felt heartbreak and pain. However, standing there with the gold around their necks, it was one of the most rewarding moments in their careers for them, ranking among the best experiences.
The silver lining
On an exceptional day for Team Great Britain in table tennis, it was Robert Davies and Will Bayley who brought home the silver medals in the men’s MS1 and men’s MS7 competitions respectively. However, according to Bayley, a critical decision regarding scoring may have contributed to his defeat.
I just felt it was unnecessary and unfair, that’s how I felt, I told him that, but it’s sport though and I have to find a way of dealing with it.

Bronze triumphs
Maskill secured the gold for the backstroke, while OliviaNewman-Baronius earned a bronze medal representing Great Britain. In the women’s S6 400m freestyle competition, Maisie Summers-Newton bagged the bronze. On the male side, Mark Tompsett clinched a bronze in the men’s S14 100m backstroke event.
