MMA Twitter reacts to Demetrious Johnson's retirement announcement

As a seasoned MMA enthusiast with decades of watching fights under my belt, I must admit that Demetrious Johnson’s retirement feels like the twilight of an era. His announcement as the first-ever ONE Championship Hall of Fame inductee is a testament to his unparalleled skills and impact on the sport.

Last Friday, September 6th, during the ONE Championship live show, Demetrious Johnson, a previous UFC titleholder, declared his departure from mixed martial arts (MMA). Additionally, he was recognized as the inaugural member to be inducted into the ONE Championship Hall of Fame.

The news wasn’t entirely unexpected since he hadn’t competed in MMA for a while and had already signaled his intention to focus on other areas. However, it’s still a significant moment in the annals of MMA.

As I mentioned during my previous visit to Denver, Colorado, I hinted that this might be my final fight, and I was sincere. I’ve decided to hang up my gloves in mixed martial arts. I want to express my deep gratitude for the chance you’ve given me.

Johnson is among the most honored UFC titleholders in history and often recognized as the greatest flyweight ever. He became part of the first-ever trade when the UFC and ONE Championship exchanged him for Ben Askren. Following the announcement, numerous fighters, journalists, and fans expressed their reactions on Twitter about this development.

Johnson’s most recent bout was in May 2023, which he won against Adriano Moraes. He is now retiring from the sport with a record of 25 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw. His victories include notable figures such as Tim Elliott, Henry Cejudo, John Dodson, Kyoji Horiguchi, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, and several others.
