Building on the popularity of its live-action adaptation of One Piece, Netflix is doubling down on manga and anime. The streaming giant has announced a new live-action City Hunter movie, scheduled for release in 2027, and will star Ryohei Suzuki reprising his leading role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix plans to release City Hunter 2 worldwide next year. This sequel follows the successful live-action City Hunter movie, which was based on the popular manga. The first film was a hit on Netflix in 2024, immediately reaching the #1 spot on the Global Top 10 list for non-English movies and appearing in the Top 10 in 32 countries, including Japan, France, and South Korea.
City Hunter 2 Will Expand Tsukasa Hojo’s Original Manga With a New Mission
Fans can expect the upcoming City Hunter 2 to further develop the central role of Suzuki as the charming and somewhat clumsy problem-solver. He’ll be tackling a new case in the shadowy side of Tokyo, but things will get tricky when a captivating and dangerous woman gets involved. This blend of action and seduction is typical for Ryo Saeba, the popular character from Tsukasa Hojo’s manga, which first appeared in 1985. Suzuki’s portrayal of the skilled detective in 2024 was highly praised, building on the character’s established fame.
Suzuki expressed gratitude to fans for their support of the first film, explaining that it made the new City Hunter 2 possible. “I’m truly grateful,” they said in a recent statement.
I’m incredibly honored to be working on Tsukasa Hojo’s City Hunter again, and to bring a story so loved by fans worldwide to life. It’s a responsibility I take very seriously, and I’m approaching this film with a lot of focus and drive. The first movie showed how Ryo and Kaori met, but this time, we’re really diving into what I think is the heart of City Hunter – the very best version of the story we can tell.
The creator of the manga, Hojo, shared a message with fans after Netflix announced the series. He said he was thrilled to finally share the news and was very impressed after visiting the set. He specifically praised actor Ryohei Suzuki’s dedication and physical transformation, noting Suzuki’s commitment to his work. Hojo believes the series will be a wonderful and passionate project thanks to the hard work of everyone involved.
With City Hunter 2 planned for release in 2027, Netflix Japan is demonstrating significant progress with its Japanese-language content. The company has commissioned several live-action adaptations of popular manga series, including Yu Yu Hakusho, Mob Psycho 100, and Bleach. City Hunter taps into a wave of nostalgia and represents a key project for Netflix’s expanding Japanese division, with this sequel’s expected success signaling further growth potential with Japanese audiences.
