What are the overtime rules for NFL playoff games?
As a football fan, I’ve been following the changes to the NFL’s playoff overtime rules for years. Most of what we know today came in with changes back in 2010, but the league tweaked things again last spring. Now, both teams are guaranteed to have a possession before someone wins – a move I think makes things a lot fairer and more exciting.
The rule change happened after people began closely examining overtime rules following the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff win against the Buffalo Bills in January 2022. Before the new rule guaranteeing each team a possession, the team that received the ball first had won the vast majority – 10 out of 11 – of playoff games that went to overtime since 2010.
Here’s a breakdown of the playoff overtime rules:
- A coin flip determines which team receives the opening kickoff.
- Each team will have the opportunity to possess the ball at least once before a winner is determined.
- Teams play 15-minute periods until there’s a winner.
- If the score is tied after each team’s first possession, the next score by either team (touchdown, field goal or safety) will win the game.
- There are no coach challenges, with all reviews being initiated by the replay official.
- Each team gets three timeouts per half (two overtime periods).
- If there is no winner after the fourth overtime period, there will be another coin toss before play resumes.
Who is the referee for Super Bowl LX?
Shawn Smith, a referee with 11 seasons of NFL experience, will be the official for Super Bowl LX. This marks his first time as the lead referee for the Super Bowl, though he previously served as an alternate for Super Bowls LV and LVIII.
The officiating crew for the Super Bowl will consist of Roy Ellison (umpire), Eugene Hall (side judge), Greg Steed (back judge), Dana McKenzie (down judge), Julian Mapp (line judge), Jason Ledet (field judge), and Andrew Lambert (replay official). This will be the first time any of them have worked the Super Bowl.
