Classic Marvel star will return in Avengers: Secret Wars in TWO roles, reports say

As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of their cinematic universe from its humble beginnings to the sprawling epic it is today, I can hardly contain my excitement about this latest news! The return of Chris Evans as both Johnny Storm and Captain America in Avengers 6 has sent shockwaves through the Marvel community.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has progressed well past the midpoint of its Multiverse Saga narrative, and the conclusion of this grand tale appears more distinct than ever before. This isn’t simply due to its current position, but rather because the franchise had been experiencing more setbacks than successes until recently. This year saw a significant shift with the groundbreaking release of Deadpool and Wolverine, which was followed by an equally impressive announcement – Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the series as the primary antagonist for the saga, Doctor Doom.

Anything is possible in the multiverse, including replacing your major villain with a new one (as Downey’s Doom will now replace Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror), so bringing back the Iron Man star in a new role was doable (and expensive, it seems!). And as surprising as it was in many ways, in others it wasn’t, because expectations are high for the upcoming two Avengers movies, with fans already expecting to see some major returns in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

A fresh report suggests that an original cast member from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may make a reappearance in multiple roles, seemingly validating speculations about the actor’s future within the franchise.

Chris Evans will reportedly appear in Avengers 6 as both Johnny Storm and Captain America

According to recent updates from Marvel insider Marvel Scoops (previously Marvel News), it appears Chris Evans might revisit the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking on the roles of Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Johnny Storm (The Human Torch). When queried about potential appearances in “Avengers: Secret Wars”, the source confirmed, “Yes.

Following Evans’ latest comeback to the series, he featured in “Deadpool and Wolverine” portraying an alternate iteration of Johnny Storm, the character he previously played in the 2005 “Fantastic Four” and its sequel “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” from 2007. In essence, this marked the first introduction of the Human Torch within the MCU since the character hadn’t been present in the franchise prior to that moment (the aforementioned films were produced when Fox held the rights to the characters).

Captain America, another one of his characters, is a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Chris Evans initially embodied this iconic character, The Star-Spangled Man With A Plan, in the year 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”. Since then, he has reprised the role in two subsequent films, as well as all four Avengers movies. Additionally, he made brief appearances in “Thor: The Dark World”, “Ant-Man”, and “Spider-Man: Homecoming”.

Until 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers, who was both the head of The Avengers team and often shared screen time with Iron Man, played a crucial role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In that film, his character traveled back in time to live a fulfilling life with Peggy Carter. He later returned as an older man, passing the Captain America mantle and shield to his long-time friend Sam Wilson. However, the MCU has not yet clarified if Steve is dead, retired, or returned to another timeline, leaving it open for speculation in shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

In the upcoming films, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” fans are eagerly waiting for significant appearances from characters spanning the Marvel Multiverse. There’s been a lot of chatter about a possible climactic battle reminiscent of “Endgame,” potentially involving characters from various classic Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, whether they originate from within the MCU or before its inception.

Due to recent speculations and appearances, Evans’ name has been frequently mentioned by fans in discussions, hinting at a potential comeback as Johnny Storm or Captain America. After his brief cameo as the former in the Deadpool and Wolverine movie, it seems less probable for him to reprise that role again, especially since Joseph Quinn will debut the MCU’s version of the character in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025. However, if Evans were to play the same version he portrayed in the original Fantastic Four movies and perhaps reunite with his co-stars from those films, that would be a different scenario altogether. Additionally, the thought of him returning as Captain America, even in an alternate version, is undeniably appealing.
