Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof weighs in on review-bombing shows and movies over “wokeness”
As a long-time enthusiast of thought-provoking television shows, I find myself constantly baffled by the review-bombing culture that’s taken over the digital world today. Shows like The Sandman, The Rings of Power, Doctor Who, and Watchmen have all fallen victim to this unjustified backlash, despite being some of the most innovative and groundbreaking series in recent memory.
Numerous exceptional television series exist that some might categorize as ‘progressive,’ but unfortunately, have received unfavorable ratings from detractors. Shows like The Sandman, The Rings of Power, Doctor Who and Watchmen are prime examples. Notably, the latter, produced by Damon Lindelof, was one of the standout TV shows in 2019 – a superhero drama that expanded upon Alan Moore’s iconic comic book series. Regrettably, these shows were prematurely dismissed by review-bombers who failed to give them a fair chance.
Today, the phenomenon of review-bombing is widespread. Creative professionals have limited options to counteract this except for voicing their disapproval. For instance, a current scenario involves review-bombers criticizing ‘wokeness’ in the latest series, The Acolyte, which features a female showrunner and actors of color. Granted, The Acolyte may not have been an exceptional series. However, it seems excessive to subject it to such widespread, unjustified criticism.
Regarding Lindelof’s TV adaptation of ‘Watchmen’, it was indeed remarkable, raking in several prominent awards such as the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series. However, even among those who hadn’t watched the series, there was a wave of negative reviews flooding sites like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with The Guardian, Lindelof expressed his approach to handling unfavorable reviews. “I can easily brush it off,” he said, “as many times the critics haven’t actually watched the work themselves.” Any criticism that comes after viewing the work doesn’t faze him. However, criticisms made in a ‘review-bombing’ context, where reviews are posted before the work has been seen, don’t concern him either.
“You have to taste my food before you spit it out,” he added.
Lindelof clarified the primary motivations behind the practice of review-bombing. He stated that such actions are often triggered when a cherished intellectual property is perceived as promoting progressive themes, featuring an excess of women, a high representation of people of color, or being supportive of LGBTQIA+ issues.
