Florence Pugh herself has explained why she baldly sported her head for her character in the upcoming film, “We Live in Time.

In the decades-spanning, romantic drama, the actors from Dune 2 and Oppenheimer team up with Andrew Garfield. This movie traces the story of their relationship, starting from its early days and continuing through their shared life.

In May, Pugh made an appearance at the Met Gala sporting a freshly-shorn hairstyle that turned out to be part of her preparation for an upcoming role.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Pugh set the record straight on why she shaved her hair off.

She stated, in response to the reactions to her gaze at the Met Gala, “It seems there was a strange online rumor suggesting that I did it as a way to reclaim my identity, but let me assure you, I’ve never expressed anything like that throughout my entire life.

Instead, it was during initial discussions with director John Crowley that she learned the actual cause for her new hairstyle – he proposed using a wig instead of requiring her to shave her own hair.

She interrupted him in the middle of his speech, saying, “John, it’s simply impossible for anyone to portray a character in a film like this without carrying out the necessary actions,” she continued. “If you’re not willing to do it, I firmly believe that you shouldn’t be part of a storyline like this.

In the film, Almut, portrayed by Pugh, experiences a heartbreaking prognosis that challenges her relationship with Tobias (played by Garfield), following their early romantic phases.

The film titled “We Live in Time” is helmed by director John Crowley, who has previously worked on “The Goldfinch” and “Brooklyn”. The screenplay was penned by Nick Payne, a playwright who has won the Olivier Award. Additionally, Benedict Cumberbatch serves as an executive producer for this production.

Tonight, on September 6th, is where the movie’s grand debut happens at the Toronto International Film Festival. However, cinema-goers in the UK will have to be patient until New Year’s Day in 2025 to catch the film in their local theaters.

We Live in Time will be released in the UK on January 1, 2025.
