I’ve been watching Digimon for almost thirty years, and it started as a simple virtual pet game. But it’s grown into something much bigger! There are now over 500 episodes and twelve movies spread across ten different anime series. What’s really cool is that Digimon isn’t slowing down – it recently got a fresh, cyberpunk look with Digimon Beatbreak.
While the characters and storylines in Digimon change with each new series, the core idea of raising and battling monsters always stays the same, and we can expect many more Digimon shows in the future. However, there are also other anime out there that are just as good, or even better, at this concept. If you’re a Digimon fan – or even if you’ve been disappointed with recent seasons – these shows are definitely worth checking out.
Monster Rancher Thrives In A Fun, Fantasy World That’s Rich In Memorable Creatures
Like Digimon, Monster Rancher first appeared as a video game in 1997. Tecmo created Monster Rancher as a similar game, but with a unique twist: players unlocked monsters by using CDs and PlayStation discs. The series has expanded beyond video games, resulting in over a dozen titles and a 73-episode anime series.
The anime Monster Rancher follows Genki, a young boy transported to a fantastical world, blending self-contained adventures with deeper explorations of its rich setting and mythology. With 73 episodes, the series strikes a good balance and concludes satisfyingly, leaving viewers eager for more. Similar to Digimon Adventure, Monster Rancher features a more mature and intense second season that will likely appeal to fans of darker anime like Digimon.
Bakugan Battle Brawlers Creates Compelling Duels Between Man & Monster
Bakugan Battle Brawlers is a pretty straightforward example of an anime created to promote a toy line. While some people see it as a copy of Beyblade, it actually shares more similarities with Digimon.
Bakugan Battle Brawlers starts as a fun competition, but quickly becomes a high-stakes battle to save both Earth and the Bakugan’s world, Vestroia. Kids team up with powerful, elemental creatures to fight against evil forces and protect their homes. The relationship between these kids and their Bakugan is similar to the popular partnerships seen in Digimon, with a strong sense of teamwork and connection.
Similar to Digimon, Bakugan Battle Brawlers explores the strong connection between people and creatures, and how they can work together seamlessly. The Bakugan series has grown and changed over time, with newer seasons sometimes losing the focus on strategy and the established rules that made the original so good. However, the first season of Bakugan Battle Brawlers is considered to be more emotionally resonant and have a stronger story than Digimon.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Combines Challenging Character Development With Daring Duels
Despite having over 1000 episodes across various anime series, the original Yu-Gi-Oh! remains the most successful part of the franchise. Similar to Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! has repeatedly reinvented itself with bold new approaches.
The newest Yu-Gi-Oh! series is perfectly fine, but the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series from 2000 to 2004 feels most like the original Digimon. Generally, both Yu-Gi-Oh! and Digimon share similarities—they both center around imaginative battles where young characters rely on powerful, supernatural beings.
The strong bond between a duelist and their monsters is central to the more complex stories about themes like corruption, friendship, and loss. Fans who enjoy the emotional journeys of characters like the DigiDestined will find the character development and storylines in Duel Monsters equally engaging. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters isn’t afraid to take risks, and these risks often lead to rewarding results.
Medabots Builds Upon The Monster Taming Genre By Going All In On Robots
Medabots, called Medarot in Japan, brings a fresh take to the popular idea of having monster companions – but with robots! In the game, Medabots fight each other in battles called Robattles. When a Medabot loses, it has to give one of its parts to the winner, which makes every fight feel important and exciting.
While Digimon battles are still exciting, they’d feel more impactful if the Digimon could suffer lasting injuries, like losing a limb. It’s also easier to build a strong rivalry when a character – like a Medabot – is targeting someone who has a real, physical vulnerability.
While switching from monster battles to robot fights in Medabots might seem unnecessary, it’s actually a clever way to incorporate elements of giant robot stories into the Digimon formula. It’s true that the English dub of Medabots was heavily edited and isn’t the ideal way to watch the series, but the same criticism could be leveled at the early English dub of Digimon Adventure as well.
Den-Noh Coil Adopts An AR Framework To Interrogate A Wicked World
Released in 2007, the 26-episode anime Den-noh Coil remains relevant even two decades later. The show is set in the near future and centers around a group of children who use augmented reality glasses to tackle challenges and interact with digital pets.
Both Digimon and Den-noh Coil explore similar themes – a world where virtual reality and the digital world are becoming more and more present, and where digital creatures are seen as myths and legends. Den-noh Coil could easily be seen as a more realistic take on the ideas presented in Digimon, trading fantastical elements for a more down-to-earth approach.
I think the comparisons to Digimon are fair, but Den-noh Coil gradually shows a much more somber side. It doesn’t shy away from sad and difficult themes, and it portrays children in vulnerable situations. While it’s definitely more psychologically complex than Digimon, I suspect fans who grew up with that series will still find a lot to love here.
Yo-Kai Watch Gives Digimon’s Duel Dynamics A Modern Makeover
Yo-kai Watch is a newer monster-collecting game series, appearing just over ten years ago. It feels more contemporary than some older franchises, and for a while, Nintendo hoped it would become a popular alternative to Pokémon.
The game Yo-kai Watch features a huge collection of supernatural creatures, similar to the Pokédex in Pokémon. What’s also neat is how Yo-kai Watch focuses on and celebrates monsters that are usually considered unusual or less common companions in games like Digimon and Pokémon.
Unlike Pokémon, Yo-kai Watch focuses on a single human befriending one Yo-kai creature, similar to the relationship between trainers and Digimon. The Yo-kai Watch device functions much like a Digivice, and the series features an interesting backstory that leads to exciting battles. Like Digimon, Yo-kai Watch blends self-contained episodes with an ongoing story arc, but it improves upon earlier shows by consistently developing its characters and world.
Pokémon’s Long-Form Storytelling Tops Digimon’s Developments
Many people think of Digimon as just a copy of Pokémon, but actually Digimon came out first. Since then, it’s been hard to avoid comparing the two series, as both continue to produce new anime and video games.
Digimon consistently earns praise for its ability to refresh the series with each new installment, bravely introducing new characters and ideas. While Pokémon has largely followed the same trainer and their Pokémon for over 1000 episodes, it still manages to feel new and exciting by incorporating elements from each new generation of video games. Pokémon’s originality stems from exploring different regions, each packed with unique Pokémon, obstacles, and evolutionary forms.
The constant introduction of fresh stories, combined with the rich history of beloved characters, makes Pokémon truly unique. The Pokémon anime has thrived thanks to the creativity of its video games – something that hasn’t always been true for Digimon. Regardless, Pokémon deserves a lot of credit for how well its anime and games work together, and for successfully integrating storytelling and marketing across both platforms.
