The Perfect Couple boss responds to White Lotus comparisons

As a seasoned gamer of mystery and suspense series, I can confidently say that the latest addition to my streaming library, Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, has undeniably piqued my interest. Comparisons to HBO’s The White Lotus are indeed intriguing, but as someone who’s been on a rollercoaster ride with shows like The Undoing and The Night Manager, I can tell you that this new production is not just a retread of familiar territory.

Netflix’s fresh murder mystery titled “The Perfect Couple” featuring Nicole Kidman, has been likened to HBO’s hit show “The White Lotus“. Essentially, both series are receiving similar praise from critics and viewers alike, implying that if you enjoy one, chances are you’ll appreciate the other.

During a recent chat with director Susanne Bier, we found ourselves curious to inquire about this topic, and although she appeared touched by the idea, she emphasized that “The Perfect Couple” adopts a unique perspective compared to others.

“I adore ‘White Lotus’, and it would truly be an honor for me,” said Susanne Bier, who has experience in producing shows like ‘The Undoing’ and ‘The Night Manager’. She shared this sentiment with Digital Spy.

“But I do feel it’s very different though,” she continued. “It’s obvious, you know, there is a kind of like wealthy people in a sexy beachy environment – and murder mysteries – but I feel it’s a completely different take.”

A 2018 novel adaptation by Elin Hilderbrand, titled “The Perfect Couple“, revolves around a prosperous family residing in Nantucket, who become suspects when a corpse is found close to their residence.

In this production, Nicole Kidman takes the lead role among a talented group that includes Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, and Jack Reynor.

Susanne Bier affirmed that the narrative is filled with numerous visual hints and subtle details. Exceptionally, The Perfect Couple excels in this aspect, even though Bier encourages viewers to relax and simply appreciate the story.

She expressed her intention that the audience would embark on an engaging journey without feeling compelled to search for movie-related hints about the mystery. However, she clarified that although these details wouldn’t reveal the solution to the mystery, they were indeed included in the story.

The Perfect Couple is available on Netflix now.
