BBC puts a halt to The Split’s Manchester-set spin-off

As a dedicated fan of “The Split”, I must admit that the news about the pause indefinitely on the spin-off, “The Split Up” has left me feeling like I’ve just been served with some unexpected legal paperwork! I was eagerly anticipating the return to the world of Kishan Law and the Defoe ladies.

The BBC has reportedly paused plans for a spin-off of hit legal drama The Split.

Back in February, news broke out that the network officially approved a new series, a spin-off from the widely beloved show, featuring Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan. This show originally aired for three seasons between 2018 and 2022.

On the other hand, Deadline states that the BBC has temporarily halted the project, previously scheduled for filming in Manchester, citing “editorial concerns” as the reason behind this pause.

As reported by Digital Spy, it appears that the broadcaster continues to stand firm in its support of the spin-off, with a potential start date being planned. Digital Spy has sought clarification from the BBC on this matter.

The upcoming six-part series, named “The Split Up“, will focus on a fresh set of legal professionals – the Kishan family.

Kishan Law is a prestigious family law firm based in Manchester, known for its high-profile clientele and strong reputation. They’re often sought out by the city’s affluent individuals due to their exceptional service, honesty, and confidentiality.

However, the fate and enduring impact of Kishan Law remains uncertain as a hidden truth from their past unexpectedly surfaces, causing both their professional and private lives to be disrupted.

In contrast to Abi Morgan’s “The Split,” which shares its universe, the new series titled “The Split Up” has a different writer. Ursula Rani Sarma, known for her work on Sky’s witty comedy series “Delicious,” is responsible for penning this spin-off.

Most recently, Morgan has seen success with Netflix series Eric starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Enthusiasts of the initial “The Split” series have something exciting to anticipate – a two-part sequel special is set to air later in the year.

It was disclosed in May that the series The Split is coming back for a span of two episodes. In this continuation, which takes place two years after the end of season three, the Defoe sisters are in Barcelona attending a wedding. The original actors, Walker and Mangan, will be reappearing along with Fiona Button and Annabel Scholey. Furthermore, Toby Stephens is joining the cast for this upcoming storyline.

The Split Up doesn’t have a release window on BBC One and BBC iPlayer yet.
