Joaquin Phoenix encouraged Lady Gaga ‘to sing poorly’ in Joker sequel: ‘I tried to undo all my technique’

Joaquin Phoenix encouraged Lady Gaga 'to sing poorly' in Joker sequel: 'I tried to undo all my technique'

As I delve into this fascinating world of Hollywood, I can’t help but marvel at the diverse and captivating careers that these artists have crafted for themselves. Take Lady Gaga, for instance – a woman who has conquered not just the music industry with her 13 Grammy awards, but also the silver screen with her acting prowess. Her journey from the Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel to Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci is a testament to her versatility and fearless approach to art.

Initially, when Lady Gaga was cast as Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel in the musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, she might not have anticipated that Joaquin Phoenix, her co-star on screen, would advise her to tone down her well-known three-octave mezzo soprano voice.

In an interview for the Vogue cover story published on Thursday, the 49-year-old ex-child star confessed that she motivated me to perform live singing, while I reciprocated by urging her to sing with less skill.

I recall requesting her to sing without using her vibrato, as it’s exceptionally captivating. However, its beauty was so profound that it seemed she felt exposed without it. Yet, once she stepped away from the technical aspects, she unveiled the true voice of her character.

Lady Gaga (originally named Stefani Germanotta) shared that she intentionally tried to “discard all my learned skills” during her acting on the set of the adult-themed musical, where she and her partner performed MGM classics as well as songs by Stevie Wonder and the Bee Gees.

The hitmaker of ‘Die With a Smile’ shared during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival that it was largely about shedding old techniques, letting go of controlled breathing, and allowing the song to fully emanate from the character instead.

Lady Gaga, earning an impressive $12 million, characterized her role as a pyromaniac patient in Arkham State Hospital as an adult woman with a singing voice reminiscent of a child.

According to David Rooney’s review in THR, since Lee is not trained as a polished singer, Lady Gaga deliberately gives a rough, gravelly performance. However, in the limited instances where the story allows her to sing freely and powerfully, both the movie and Gaga’s voice reach new heights.

Critics might argue that Lady Gaga is not utilized enough in this film. However, despite the apparent demand for more elaborate performances where she can showcase her talents, the character does undergo a complete transformation throughout the movie. Adding more of her could potentially turn the plot into a backstory for Harley Quinn-like character, named Folie à Deux.

As an ardent admirer, let me share my take on IndieWire’s David Ehrlich’s critique. In a world where a $200M budget spanned over 138 minutes earned a C- grade, it’s Todd Phillips’ film that found itself under the microscope. The criticism I resonate with the most is his observation about my beloved director stubbornly refusing to allow the songs in the movie to influence or be influenced by the real world. In simpler terms, he felt the music was isolated from the narrative and reality, which isn’t quite how I’d want it in a film I adore.

Ehrlich observed that while Arthur Fleck/The Joker is known for singing romantic ballads, Lee often chooses songs about strength and power. However, these tunes are typically simplified into rather uninteresting cabaret performances and are filmed against the dark, empty backdrop of the characters’ collective imagination.

For individuals commonly perceived as creatively barren psychopaths, fostering and amplifying each other’s eccentricities, Arthur and Lee seem devoid of even the smallest spark of imagination together.

As of now, the critic’s consensus for Joker: Folie à Deux stands at 61%, based on 44 reviews, on Rotten Tomatoes.

Joaquin received a 20 million dollar payment to play once again the award-winning character, the malnourished comedian, who faces trial for his murderous rampage that took the lives of seven individuals.

Movie Joker: Two Fools – set to premiere in US/UK cinemas on October 4 – will additionally star Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.

In 2019, the initial movie of Joker, released in 1981, broke records to become the top-earning R-rated film ever, raking in a staggering $1.079 billion worldwide, even with a mix of positive and negative criticisms.

Known for her Academy Award-winning compositions, she gained notoriety for a questionable Italian accent in her final acting performance as the historical character Patrizia Reggiani, who hired hitmen in the film “House of Gucci,” directed by Ridley Scott in 2021.

In the year 2015-2016, Lady Gaga won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress (in a mini-series or TV film) due to her portrayal of Elizabeth ‘the Countess’ Johnson in FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel.

13-time Grammy Award recipient is currently putting in a lot of effort into creating her upcoming studio album, set for release in February, with the first single scheduled to debut in October.
