Okay, so I just read an interview with Christian Bale, and apparently music is huge for him. He told NME it’s the one thing he absolutely couldn’t live without, which is a pretty strong statement! He enjoys making movies, obviously, but he says music is just on another level for getting him into character and just… life, I guess.
During an interview with NME about his part in The Bride!, where he portrays Frank (the monster, similar to Frankenstein) opposite Jessie Buckley’s Ida (the monster’s bride), Christian Bale was asked about the music that inspired his performance.
Bale talked about Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, and also mentioned Richey Edwards, the guitarist from the Manic Street Preachers – a somewhat unexpected reference.
Chrisitian Bale names Manic Street Preachers’ Richey Edwards as inspiration for his role in The Bride!
I remember being really struck by Sid Vicious in that white jacket, walking down the steps and singing ‘My Way’ in The Great Rock & Roll Swindle – it was such a powerful image. And then there was Richey Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers, when he actually cut ‘4 Real’ into his arm right in front of a journalist from NME. Both of those moments really stuck with me.
Bale enthusiastically reaffirmed his fondness for Edwards and his previous band, stating he’s been a long-time fan and still listens to their music regularly.
NME also asked Christian Bale about albums he frequently revisits. He cited Summer in Siam by The Pogues, Bummed by Happy Mondays, and Laser Guided Melodies and Pure Phase by Spiritualized. Bale added that he was probably forgetting many other great bands, and then specifically mentioned Lou Reed.
It’s somewhat ironic that both Sid Vicious and Edwards passed away a long time ago. Edwards’ remains were never discovered, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery, though suicide is the most probable explanation. The sad fates of both men may have deeply influenced Bale’s portrayal of the Frankenstein monster, regardless of any specific events in their lives.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, the director of The Bride!, asked Christian Bale and Jesse Buckley to share music with her during the film’s production. She wanted to establish the right mood for the movie. Bale noted Buckley’s vocal talent and revealed they both enjoy the band Spiritualized.
For fans of the Manic Street Preachers, it’s heartwarming to see Richey Edwards continuing to inspire artists today. Though his life was difficult, he’s clearly still remembered with affection.
