Paris Hilton has recently opened up about being diagnosed with rejection sensitivity dysphoria, or RSD. She described the condition as feeling like ‘a demon in your mind,’ highlighting how intensely she experiences rejection.
The 44-year-old socialite will be featured on Monday’s episode of The Him & Her Show, a podcast hosted by Lauryn and Michael Bosstick on Dear Media.
The hotel heiress shared that she first received an ADHD diagnosis in her late twenties, before discovering she also had Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD).
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), according to The Cleveland Clinic, is intense emotional pain triggered by failure or feeling rejected.
The clinic explained that Restless Sleep Disorder (RSD) often occurs alongside ADHD, and specialists believe this connection may be caused by variations in brain anatomy.
These differences make it harder for your brain to manage feelings and reactions to rejection, causing them to feel much stronger.
As a long-time follower of her work, I was really struck by how honestly Hilton described living with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. She explained it as feeling everything intensely – basically, any little thing that feels negative, even just thinking someone might be upset with you, can be really overwhelming.
It feels like actual pain, even though it isn’t physical. It’s similar to having a negative voice in your head, constantly putting you down.
Hilton explained that people with RSD experience intense and profound emotional pain.
Hilton explained, ‘I realize now it wasn’t actually happening – it felt like my Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria was flaring up.’ She added, ‘There’s still a lot for me to understand about it all.’
I’m passionate about understanding this better and sharing what I learn, because I believe it shouldn’t limit anyone. Instead, it can be a strength that helps people achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives.
The singer of ‘The Stars Are Blind’ admitted she had never heard of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) until she talked to other people who have ADHD.
Hilton said that communicating with people dealing with the condition has been helpful.
Hilton shared that she’s faced a lot of challenges throughout her life, particularly during the 2000s when she dealt with intense media scrutiny.
‘And suffering from this RSD with ADHD, it was like so, so extremely painful.’
The star of The Simple Life explained she wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD as a child because, back then, it wasn’t commonly recognized, especially in girls.
When I was growing up, nobody discussed this, particularly for girls and women. People generally assumed it was something only boys experienced, and the conversation always focused on the downsides.
Hilton explained that her undiagnosed ADHD made it hard to succeed in school. She said she often felt confused and struggled to keep up.
No matter how much I studied, I just couldn’t seem to remember anything. I kept failing tests and was constantly in trouble, often ending up in detention. It was a really tough time for me.
Hilton believes she’s successfully adjusted her thinking to handle the situation and succeed. Because of this, she wanted to change the way people were talking about it, hoping to be helpful.
Hilton described this ability as a superpower, saying it’s essential to who she is as an entrepreneur. While it fuels her drive and forward-thinking approach, she also admitted it can be incredibly overwhelming at times.
