NCIS: Origins knows the NCIS cannon about Gibbs and his dad (and will make it work)

As a seasoned gamer of both television and the intricate world of NCIS, I must say that the upcoming prequel series, NCIS: Origins, has me both excited and cautiously optimistic. The challenge of adhering to established canon while still crafting an engaging narrative is not unfamiliar territory in my gaming journey.

For the creation of prequels like NCIS: Origins, one challenge lies in respecting and integrating the vast amount of established lore from the show’s 21-season run

The series titled “NCIS: Origins” serves as a prequel, unfolding events shortly after the deaths of Shannon and Kelly Gibbs. A key element of this narrative is that Gibbs became part of NCIS, maintaining silence with his father until we encounter him in the main series

Despite the prequel series featuring Robert Taylor as Jackson Gibbs, fans raised concerns about the consistency with this casting choice. Given the need to adhere to the original narrative, it implies that we won’t witness interactions between Gibbs and his father. So, one might wonder, what is the purpose of having Jackson in the show if this essential dynamic is missing?

NCIS: Origins has solved the issue of the canon

David North, one of the co-showrunners, informed TVLine that they were aware of the established canon and have found a way to address the situation. Unfortunately, he didn’t reveal the details of their solution, so we’ll have to stay tuned to find out how it unfolds

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge North’s insight: Jackson held a significant place in Gibbs’s life. His impact was immense, extending beyond their verbal exchanges even when they weren’t on speaking terms. Therefore, it was only fitting to incorporate him into the storyline

We did solve it. We’re very aware of the canon and what’s been set up, and we’re working within that. But I’ll say this: Jackson is an important role, and we’ll see the influence of him on Gibbs.

It’s possible that we might witness interactions between Jackson and Mike in the upcoming episodes, as Mike took on a paternal role towards Gibbs throughout the main series. Given this, it seems plausible that Jackson would come looking for his son, but may find himself conversing with Mike instead

We don’t have too much time left before we discover the outcome; the prequel series is set to debut in October

The new series titled “NCIS: Origins” is set to debut on Monday, October 14th, at 9/8 central time, only on CBS. From then on, it will be broadcasted every week at 10/9 central time on Mondays
