36-year-old Australian breakdancer gained instant internet fame as her energetic dance routines during the sports spectacle sparked the most buzzworthy conversation among spectators
She faced a barrage of online mockery but also drew interest from international celebrities due to her distinctive performance that incorporated kangaroo-like jumping and writhing about on the ground like a snake
The athlete recently opened up about the challenging incident in an exclusive, first-time television interview with Waleed Aly on The Project, airing on Wednesday
The tell-all chat saw Raygun slam her critics for not ‘understanding’ breakdancing and discuss the huge backlash, but it has left Aussie viewers completely divided.
Although some people commended her for expressing herself openly, others seemed underwhelmed, labeling the interview a “disaster” and arguing that it was an ill-advised public relations maneuver
In the interview, some spectators noted a particular instance that seemed to indicate her nervousness, yet opinions varied about what might have caused this unease
Criticising her TV appearance, one viewer wrote on X – formerly known as Twitter: ‘This #Raygun interview…isn’t it.’

Additionally, some home viewers asserted they spotted a moment suggesting Raygun appeared ‘uneasy’ or ‘apprehensive’ during the tell-all interview
Raygun seemed uneasy when Waleed presented accusations from rap artist Spice, who stated that her act trivialised the Australian music scene
In their comment, they pointed out that as she raised her hand to her ear, it appeared that #Raygun might have been displaying signs of unease or dissemblance, often linked with lying or speaking untruths

During the interview, Raygun doubled down on her defence of her viral Olympic routine as she blamed a ‘lack of resources’, before revealing she plans to step back from competing in a shock career move.
In response to the criticism I’ve been facing, I firmly stand by my unique ‘artistic’ approach and assert that perhaps my detractors may not fully grasp its essence
She mentioned that we desperately require additional resources here in Australia if we hope to stand a chance against the world champions
It’s important to acknowledge that our team hasn’t had a strong history of winning World Championships. Therefore, it wouldn’t be fair for me to shoulder all the blame
She continued by explaining that many of the replies are primarily because people aren’t well-versed in the art of breakdancing, and there’s a wide range of techniques used within it
The performance was so ordinary within the breaking dance community that the following day, the judge, MG, felt compelled to clarify this to everyone
‘You know, it’s just a different approach in breaking. You have the athletic-style breakers and you also have the more artistic-style breakers and all of them are very valid.’
Despite her performance being seen worldwide, Raygun acknowledged that she hasn’t yet rewatched her now-notorious act
She admitted that she hasn’t re-watched it, no. It’s not uncommon for her, as she’s generally not good at reviewing her own fights
It seems there will be a delay before we can proceed. While I’ve caught glimpses here and there, rest assured I’ll catch up with it at a later point in time
Although there are rumors about her turning down TV opportunities following her contract with an influencer management firm, Raygun clarified that she doesn’t intend to return to competition anytime soon and wishes to stay away from the spotlight for a while
She mentioned that she won’t be participating in competitions for some time because she prefers not to be under the limelight and the pressure of competition is too much for her. However, she added that it has been a pleasure for her to compete in the past
It has taken some effort and struggle to resume dancing. To be honest, it’s been quite challenging for me. Dancing used to be therapeutic, but now it has become a source of stress instead
“I’m thrilled that it will be back to serving as my medication. It feels like I can breathe freely again, so yes, I am excited about resuming my usual routine, but no, I don’t think I’ll be ready for competition anytime soon.”
In a difficult period for her, Raygun confided that she’s sought help from mental health resources and temporarily stepped away from social media amidst the backlash
Yet, she pointed out that her notoriety brought her benefits too, such as communicating with individuals who otherwise wouldn’t have been acquainted with her because they were previously unknown to her
Raygun is currently overseas, having not returned from the Olympics and enjoying a previously scheduled European vacation with her partner Samuel Free, who is also her coaching assistant
