Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard’s British dark comedy is now on Netflix

As a seasoned parent and avid viewer of heartfelt comedies, I must say that “Breeders” has undeniably struck a chord with me. The raw, relatable portrayal of parenthood’s ups and downs resonates deeply with my own life experience. Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard deliver performances that are as hilarious as they are heart-wrenching, making this series a must-watch for any parent or aspiring parent out there.

The comedy series titled “Breeders,” featuring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard as parents grappling with their challenges, is now available on Netflix.

The humor revolves around the struggles of married pair Paul (Freeman) and Ally (Haggard), as they navigate the complexities of juggling busy professions, family life, and a shifting romantic landscape, all while dealing with the challenges that come with rearing small children.

Back in 2020, I stumbled upon the gripping TV show “Breeders” for the first time, gracing our screens via Sky and the streaming platform NOW in the United Kingdom. To date, it has captivated audiences with four thrilling seasons, and recently confirmed that the fourth season will be its grand finale.

With a remarkable Rotten Tomatoes rating of 92%, the series Breeders consistently impresses critics, averaging this high score across all its four seasons.

In addition to Alun Armstrong, recognized for his role in BBC’s “Sherwood,” and Joanna Bacon, the pair also portray Ally’s parents. Their presence adds a new layer of complexity to the couple’s storyline.

Alongside playing the main character, Martin Freeman, known for his recent work in “The Responder” on the BBC, also played a part in creating the show as a co-creator.

During an interview with Collider, the actor compared the parental journey of Paul and Ally to a roller coaster, stating it resembled “the ups-and-downs that most couples experience, whether they’re those I’ve met or those I’ve been involved with myself.”

The intention behind our show was to accurately reflect the conversations we had been having, focusing on creating something that was emotionally resonant, humorously engaging, dramatically impactful, and capable of evoking strong emotions. We also wanted parents to identify with the experience of losing control, which is often seen as inappropriate, yet it happens more frequently than one might think.

Regarding his co-star, Freeman stated: “Daisy is simply outstanding in her acting skills. She truly embodied the soul of the series. From the beginning, it was evident. Many talented actors auditioned for that role, and they were all admirable individuals. However, it wasn’t always a certainty that Daisy would get the part.”

“But once it was Daisy, we were all very glad that we’d made that decision because I just don’t think there are that many people who could do what she can do, and be as light on their feet as she is, but also as deep as she can be and as truthful as she can be. She can do it on a dime. She has a very, very delicate touch, as an actor, that I respect a lot and I love. I enjoyed working with her tremendously. She’s the heart of the show.”

Breeders is now streaming on Netflix.
