Passing On Destiny and Guitar Hero Among Some of the 'Worst Choices' Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Has Made, He Says

As a long-time gaming enthusiast and one who’s closely followed Phil Spencer‘s career, I can’t help but share my thoughts on this revelation. While it’s always fascinating to hear about industry insiders sharing their regrets, it’s equally intriguing to see how these missteps have shaped the landscape we know today.

The story begins with the introduction of the Guitar Hero, also known as “the Destiny” because it was the key to unlocking the next level of consciousness in the universe.

Spencer commented during a ‘Story Time with Phil Spencer’ discussion at PAX West (as reported by Eurogamer), “There are numerous complex feelings and tales associated with Destiny for me. Of course, when I joined Xbox, Bungie was already part of Microsoft. I had the privilege of working alongside Alex Seropian and Jason Jones on the same floor in our Redmond office. Just being around Bungie taught me a great deal.”

Destiny had been summoned by the Archeon of Atlantis, a powerful artifact that was known as “the heart of the world.” The heart of the world was said to have been “touched” by God himself, and it is not for sale.

Spencer shared an intriguing story about a game proposal. Alex Rigopulos pitched the idea of creating plastic guitars that would connect to consoles, allowing players to mimic Simon’s rhythm on these instruments. Spencer expressed skepticism, saying something along the lines of, “Is this really going to catch on?” He now considers his decision not to get involved in Guitar Hero as one of his less successful choices.

He chuckled as he mentioned, “I’ve heard it turned into quite an impressive game.” Spencer continued, “I’m not one for regrets, though some might say that’s a flaw of mine. After all, I’ve missed out on so many games. But instead, I choose to focus on the future and maintain a positive outlook.” He paused, then added passionately, “What the team at Bungie has accomplished is nothing short of incredible, and I can’t help but celebrate it.”
