The AFL star is hoping to bring light to the neurological disorder and is taking part in the charity event Walk for Epilepsy.
As I share my journey, I’ve experienced several seizures over the past four to five years. I’m still in the midst of figuring out the root cause for me personally. At present, this is where my health exploration stands.
“For about two and a half years during our relationship, she has experienced a few episodes that resemble seizures, and we are currently trying to understand the cause and find a resolution.”
You might understand that it’s quite unsettling when something that was functioning smoothly suddenly starts malfunctioning. She’s currently trying to figure out the root cause and circumstances leading to this issue.
Nathan expressed his intention that by openly talking about the subject, he aims to reduce the associated shame and aid Brodie, aged 35, in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the illness.
Epilepsy is identified by sudden, unregulated bursts of electrical energy within the brain that disrupt the normal communication between nerve cells. This disruption can cause seizures, during which muscle coordination, senses like taste and smell may become temporarily dysfunctional for several minutes.
This leads to seizures, which for some may mean only that their food tastes odd — while others may have such violent reactions that they blackout.
The main treatment is anti-epileptic drugs to reduce seizure risk, by altering the electrical activity in the brain cells so they become less ‘excitable’ and less likely to misfire.
More severe cases may need surgery to remove a small part of the brain that’s causing the attacks.
Other approaches include implanting a small electrical device inside the body and wiring it up to the brain to interrupt the chaotic signals between nerve cells, or following a ketogenic diet — low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat — which is thought to reduce the ‘excitability’ of nerve cells and can halve the number of episodes.
The high-profile couple are often seen navigating the Melbourne scene.
Previously, it was disclosed that Brodie and Nathan found common ground due to their shared backgrounds, following the start of their relationship in 2022.
Regardless of a difference of 17 years, the Melbourne entrepreneur expressed that they share many similarities and constantly motivate one another to strive for personal excellence on a daily basis.
