Netflix’s Kaos star on the show’s “special” moment for trans representation
As a fan of richly layered storytelling and representation, I must say that the character of Caeneus in Kaos, played by Misia Butler, is nothing short of revolutionary. Having grown up with a deep interest in mythology, the opportunity to see this ancient figure brought to life in such a modern and relatable way is truly a gift.
Actress Misa Butler from the series “Kaos” has shared her thoughts on the program’s portrayal of transgender characters, particularly her role as Caeneus.
The current Netflix series reinterprets Ancient Greek mythology using dark humor, and it features Butler portraying a significant character who identifies as trans masculine, playing a pivotal role in the storyline.
As a gamer, I’ve always been fascinated by the tale of Caeneon, who in a former life was a woman. One fateful day, she was violated by the mighty Poseidon. Yet, the waters that witnessed this act were not just any sea – they were the domain of a sea-god. Moved perhaps by sympathy or anger, the sea-god transformed her into a man, imbuing Caeneon with a new life and identity.
In an interview with Radio Times, Butler shared that his fascination with the character Caeneus began during his school years, as he became completely captivated by it.
“I learned about the character in school, so I’m like, even more obsessed,” he said.
He noted that it’s quite remarkable to encounter writing that fully develops a trans masculine character beyond their identity, making the characterization truly unique. He commended the work of Kaos creator Charlie Covell, who is also known for creating the acclaimed Channel 4 series The End of The F***ing World.
“I think that it doesn’t happen so often and I feel very blessed for that.”
Additionally, he pondered over the potential influence of his character’s romantic storyline involving Riddy (played by Aurora Perrineau) might have on viewers who identify as transgender.
On my initial day of shooting, we were filming a pivotal scene – my audition scene, in fact – where my character and another had an extended conversation on a bench. This scene deeply touched me, and it seemed to affect Charlie as well, since we were both shedding tears.
If I were a child watching this scene, I believe I would feel deeply understood and my overall experience would be significantly more impactful since I would see myself strongly portrayed.
In addition to Butler and Perrineau, this highly anticipated Netflix production boasts an impressive cast that includes Jeff Goldblum portraying Zeus, Billie Piper stepping into the role of Cassandra, Debi Mazar as Medusa, and David Thewlis bringing Hades to life. Other notable actors are also part of the ensemble.
