Would The Serpent Queen season 3 on Starz be necessary?

As a seasoned gamer of historical dramas who has navigated the treacherous waters of Tudor England with Anne Boleyn and Catherine of Aragon, I must say that the finale of The Serpent Queen left me on the edge of my seat! While I’m not sure if I should tip my cap to the writers for a job well done or curse them for making me so emotionally invested in these characters, I can definitely say that the ending of season 2 has left me wanting more.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, today’s release of The Serpent Queen season 2 finale was nothing short of epic! It was a rollercoaster ride of violence and intensity, with “All Saints Day” being the bloodiest chapter. The aftermath of the carnage was meticulously portrayed, giving us a chance to catch our breath before diving back into the action.

It’s unfortunate that Catherine’s efforts to maintain peace between Catholics and Protestants, as well as her attempts to navigate the conflict between the crown and Edith, were unsuccessful without resulting in bloodshed. Despite her best efforts throughout the season, it seems these issues persisted. Given the resolution of major plot points and numerous character deaths, one might question if a third season of “The Serpent Queen” on Starz is essential.

The network has not disclosed if the historical drama will be renewed or terminated as of now. They’ll likely evaluate the audience ratings, particularly focusing on the finale viewership. While there are other factors at play, viewership is typically the most significant one that businesses look at when deciding whether to continue a show.

The Serpent Queen season 3 should happen

From my perspective, I firmly believe that season 3 of “The Serpent Queen” could not only function but is indeed crucial, given the way the second season concluded. In the climactic scenes, King Charles is shown coughing up blood, indicating his days are numbered. There appears to be a shift in Catherine too as she utters, “long live the king… though there’s always a spare,” suggesting a possible change in her character dynamics.

I do believe she cares about her children in her own way, but it’s clear that power is kind of getting to her head. After she says this line, we cut to Anjou smiling at the camera. He would be the next one to take the throne after all. Unless Charles was able to have a son before he dies. In season 1, Catherine was introduced to this wild world and had to contend with her husband and his mistress, Diana de Poitiers. In the second season, she’s tried to maintain peace.

Should a third season unfold, it would be captivating to witness Catherine de’ Medici wield her serpent queen power in all its ruthless glory, as she sets aside some of her benevolence and governs with unyielding authority. I believe there are still numerous directions the narrative could take, particularly if we delve into Anjou’s reign as king. In actuality, Catherine survived through the reigns of Francis, Charles, and Henry III.

Indeed in the series, it appears that they’ve swapped Henry’s story with Anjou since we’re aware he has passed away. This royal character exhibits impulsive behavior, yet his mother wields a significant influence over him, much like others. For now, at least. Will they manage to preserve tranquility and equilibrium within the palace between them? Such a power struggle would make for an engaging plotline to delve into.

Plus, newly married Henry Bourbon and Princess Margot I think will work together as they both sort of have a vendetta against Catherine. This time instead of the main challenges to put up with coming from the outside and the religious wars, it would be within her own home and children. This was explored a bit in The Serpent Queen season 2, but can definitely be fleshed out more in a potential season 3. That’s why I really think it is necessary, and there’s definitely still more story to tell! What do you think?
