Joe Bob Briggs announces some great news about the future of The Last Drive-In!

As a long-time fan of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, I can’t help but feel like I’ve hit the jackpot again! After the slight hiccup in season six, the announcement of a seventh season has me more excited than a kid on Halloween night. I remember back in 2017 when the marathon that broke the internet first aired, and it feels surreal to think we’re already on season seven.

Despite some fans thinking that the Shudder series “The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs” might have concluded its last season, the man himself made an unexpected announcement on social media. Instead of saying goodbye, he revealed that “TLDI ” has indeed been renewed for a seventh season!

Following Joe Bob’s distinctive style, he announced that they, along with Darcy and the rest of the team, will carry on their extensive explorations for another year, featuring an array of “excellent movies, mediocre movies, terrible movies” and plenty of fun antics related to The Last Drive-In.

Fan reactions were mixed during season six as it introduced alterations in its structure. Compared to the preceding five seasons, this season stretched longer, deviating from the traditional double-feature format that viewers had grown accustomed to. Instead, each episode now showcased a single movie, leaving some fans disappointed.

As a Mutant, I was able to adapt well to the new format change because I wasn’t planning to watch the second movie in theaters anyway. The episodes air every night at 9:00 p.m., often lasting over two hours with Joe Bob’s commentary and the crew’s antics. When it was convenient, I would catch the second film on-demand once it became accessible online.

While some things about The Last Drive-In changed, others stayed the same

More films were continuously shown, making for an enjoyable evening, as “The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon” makes its live premiere tonight. Unfamiliar viewers should note that they can look forward to watching six movies tonight, a tribute to the series concluding its sixth season.

This event also serves as a tribute to the marathon that kick-started the craze known as “The Last Drive-In”, which gained notoriety when Shudder’s servers crumbled under the weight of viewers eager to witness the comeback of the iconic Joe Bob Briggs. That very marathon marked the introduction of Darcy, the Mail Girl, who successfully persuaded Briggs to make his grand return to broadcasting. Initially skeptical about his audience’s loyalty, he was proved wrong in the most delightful manner possible, as we now know.

Over the past six years, Darcy has undeniably demonstrated her worth to the program with her impressive contributions. Her passion for horror movies is evident, as she’s showcased this through some outstanding cosplays, such as Mary Lou and Frankenhooker, which I particularly admire. She’s also been a driving force behind bringing Hogzilla to the show and injected emotion into numerous episodes. During one of the Christmas specials, she and Joe Bob both shared deeply emotional personal stories that truly touched us all.

As certain gamers persistently attack her over her physical looks and attitude, I stand by her side all the way, and I’m confident that Joe Bob would do the same too.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Last Drive-In adapted and continued despite not being able to host our usual in-person guest appearances. Instead, we brought in stars like Eli Roth through video conferencing. Additionally, there were some modifications made to our stage setup during this period.

It’s uncertain if the fresh format will persist through season seven, but there’s logic behind Shudder keeping it going. With some viewers contemplating subscription cancellations during off-seasons, extending the season and producing more specials (usually, we can expect Halloween, Christmas, and a few others) benefits Shudder.

Regardless of where the series goes from here, let’s all take pleasure in knowing that we’ll get to enjoy more seasons of “The Last Drive-In”!
