Chris Hemsworth Throws Shade at ‘Avengers’ Director For Mishandling Thor

Chris Hemsworth recently explained how one of the Avengers directors didn’t quite get Thor’s character right, and many agree with his assessment. Having played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for 15 years, including all four Avengers films in the original saga, Hemsworth has a unique perspective. In The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, Thor was presented as a dignified, somewhat aloof Asgardian, speaking in a formal, almost Shakespearean style – a continuation of his portrayal in the 2011 Thor film. While Avengers: Age of Ultron showed a more down-to-earth and humorous side to Thor, some viewers felt he was still underutilized, lacking significant personal struggles within the story.

In a February 2026 interview with Bro Bible, Chris Hemsworth hinted at issues with how director Joss Whedon handled his character, Thor, in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hemsworth referenced a previous comment Whedon made, admitting Thor was a difficult character to write.

Hemsworth shared that his experiences with Marvel directors varied, noting some had a strong vision for the character, while others didn’t.

Thor’s character evolved throughout the movies. The first films I did with Kenneth Branagh were really the beginning, a fresh start. He was an amazing director – incredibly detailed and collaborative, which was fantastic. Later, I worked with other directors, and their visions for the character varied. Some knew exactly who Thor was, while others didn’t, and even admitted it – I remember Joss Whedon saying he was a difficult character to write, especially after he became so powerful.

Hemsworth complimented Taika Waititi’s direction, noting they both felt tired of the previous portrayal of Thor. This shared feeling led to their enthusiasm for creating a more humorous take on the character in Thor: Ragnarok.

I was starting to feel burnt out with my work, and then I met Taika, who felt the same way. We both wanted to try something new and different.

During an interview with Vanity Fair in May 2015, while discussing Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon said that Thor was consistently the most difficult character to fit into the story.

After the somewhat mixed reaction to Thor: Love and Thunder in November 2022, Chris Hemsworth expressed a desire to move beyond the style of filmmaking director Taika Waititi brought to the character. He said he’d like to explore a Thor with a significantly different feel and mood.

I’m not even sure if they’ll ask me back, but if they do, I’d need things to be very different next time – the whole vibe, everything. It was just too much for me personally. (laughs) Thor really went off the rails at the end there, and now he needs to get things under control.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Thor in the new Avengers: Doomsday movie! It sounds like he’s going to be stepping into a more mature role as one of the most experienced heroes, and I’m hoping they strike the perfect balance – keeping his powerful, god-like presence but still letting his fun, witty side shine through. It’s exciting to think of him as an elder statesman among the Avengers!

Avengers: Doomsday is set to premiere in theaters on December 18.

Why Chris Hemsworth’s Candid Thor Comments Make the Most Sense

Chris Hemsworth recently shared his thoughts on how his character, Thor, has changed over time, and admitted that director Joss Whedon faced difficulties showcasing Thor effectively alongside so many other heroes in The Avengers. This highlights how hard it is to make Thor a central figure when there’s a large cast.

Thor’s first appearance in the Thor movie was a great start for the character, largely because of its classic, Shakespearean feel. However, things became more difficult when Thor joined the larger Avengers team, with its many conflicting personalities. Director Joss Whedon had to give everyone a fair amount of attention, which meant Thor often got less focus. This made it challenging to include him in team adventures without simplifying him into just a strong fighter or a source of jokes.

The upcoming movie, Doomsday, will finally give Thor a personal connection to the story by introducing Love, his adopted daughter. Even a small role for Love will be significant, giving Thor a powerful reason to fight against Doctor Doom – beyond just being a hero – as the entire universe is at risk.
