As I delve into the captivating tale of Joan Hannington, a woman who danced with danger and defied societal norms, I am both intrigued and saddened by her tumultuous journey. Her life story, riddled with theft, deceit, and loss, mirrors a thriller novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Yet, amidst all the chaos, there is an undeniable resilience that shines through.

In the thrilling first peek at ITV’s new series, Joan, I find myself utterly captivated as I step into the shoes of the enigmatic, criminal mastermind, Joan Hannington – affectionately known as the ‘Godmother of crime.’

In the forthcoming series, the actress, aged 28, takes on the role of one of Britain’s infamous diamond thieves, Joan. A sneak peek at the show reveals Sophie adopting various disguises to resemble Joan.

In the trailer, set to Habanera from the opera Carmen, Sophie was seen romping with her co-star Frank Dillane, who plays her on-screen lover Boisie Hannington.

Sophie can also be observed consuming diamonds, similar to how historical figure Joan would frequently conceal her criminal activities’ traces by doing so temporarily.

Additionally, she’s observed striding along a corridor with a swollen cheek and what appears to be a fractured nose, hinting that her involvement in criminal activities could be a means to extricate herself from a perilous past.

A second glance at the actress turning around implies she’s being chased, while a following shot of a patrol car with flashing lights in the rearview mirror suggests this suspicion is validated.

The trailer suggests that Joan will delve into the scandalous aspects of the jewel thief’s lifestyle, yet it also highlights some of the luxurious elements of her life, such as cruising in a sports car along a winding coastal path over rugged cliffs.

Exploring further into the shadowy criminal world, Joan encounters Boisie – a mysterious antiques dealer with an irresistible charm who leads her into realms of peril and intense emotion.

Joan’s adventure is a thrilling, high-risk journey that involves cleverness, captivating charisma, and an extraordinary knack for mimicry. This journey is as much about surviving as it is about transforming herself.

Behind every daring robbery and each stolen diamond lies a single, driving motivation: to ensure a safe and secure future for her child.

Much of what is known about Joan Hannington comes from her 2004 memoir, I Am What I Am.

17-year-old jewelry thief known as The Godmother, who left school early at age 13, later tied the knot with Ray Pavey, a man previously convicted of armed robbery and a decade her senior, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar.

In the span of less than a year, Joan gave birth to her daughter, Debbie. However, Ray was imprisoned when Debbie was just a small child, leaving Joan no choice but to place Debbie in foster care.

Initially, Joan made off with a vehicle, which she utilized to travel to visit her daughter Debbie. However, law enforcement swiftly apprehended her. Following this incident, Joan parted ways with Pavey, and the affluent couple who had been providing temporary care for Debbie were granted custody of her instead.

Following the completion of her two-year probation term, Joan started employment at an exclusive jewelry store, which is where she rekindled her inclination towards theft and consuming jewels.

Afterward, she wed Boisie Hannington, who presented himself as an open-market antiquities merchant but secretly engaged in theft.

In unison, they devised two plans – one involving forged checks and the other peddling sham antiques. Meanwhile, Joan persisted in swindling millions from jewelry stores.

In the blink of an eye, life took an unprecedented turn as my beloved husband Boisie met his tragic end, just days after our precious son, Benny, made his grand entrance into the world. His untimely demise was due to an attempt to incinerate a house for ill-gotten insurance money, leaving me, a young widow, reeling with shock and grief.

After allegedly handing over the stolen goods, the thief seems to have made a fresh start, and in the year 2004, she released her autobiography.

It’s said that Hannington provided her thoughts on the fresh series, a production of Anna Symon, who both wrote and collaborated with the screenwriter and novelist, Helen Black.

In the main article for the June 2024 edition of British Vogue, Sophie shared the story of being off-set for Joan’s filming in September 2023 while news about her split with Joe Jonas dominated the media.

The singer of the Jonas Brothers band sought a divorce from his actress spouse, leading to a legal dispute over the residence of their kids. This dispute arose because he reportedly declined to accompany the children to the UK for visitation, contrary to previously arranged plans.

She reminded us that she was working on a film set, with another two weeks left on her contract, which meant she had to stay put and couldn’t depart at the time.

Originally, my children were in the United States, but due to my obligation to complete a task named Joan, I was unable to reach them. Consequently, numerous articles began appearing.

Sophie was well-known for being captured at a UK party a few days prior to Joe filing for divorce; it was eventually disclosed that this event was actually the Joan movie wrap party.

1. “Joan will be broadcasted on ITV for British audiences starting from September, whereas American viewers can watch it on The CW from October 2.”
