Jake Humphrey opens up about living in ‘permanent fear’ as he battles with anxiety and imposter syndrome: ‘It could all end tomorrow’

Jake Humphrey has shared that he lives with constant worry, struggling with both anxiety and feelings of inadequacy despite his success.

The 47-year-old TV host revealed in his new memoir that he experienced significant hardship growing up, describing his younger years as a time of ‘physical, mental, and general humiliation’.

Those devastating experiences have stayed with him into adulthood.

He now recognizes he tends to jump to the worst possible conclusion and often worries that everything could fall apart at any moment.

Jake’s first major brush with anxiety came when he started at CBBC 25 years ago.

In a new interview, he revealed that fear, anxiety, and imposter syndrome still affect him today.

He admitted to The Mirror that he still struggles with fear, anxiety, and feelings of self-doubt, constantly worried that his success could disappear at any moment.

‘But now, my two anxieties really revolve around health and kids.’

His anxiety has also impacted his work. When he first started in Formula 1, the immense pressure almost made him resign on his very first day.

He explained that when he met Steve Rider, he immediately knew he wasn’t up to the task of hosting Formula 1. He felt so overwhelmed that he considered quitting before even starting.

Luckily, Jake decided not to resign and ended up hosting the sport on BBC for four seasons.

He then joined BT Sports in 2013, presenting football until 2023.

I was really saddened to hear Jake say he probably wouldn’t present football again. He’d been getting so much awful online hate, and it clearly took a toll on him. It’s just awful that someone so talented would feel forced to step away because of that kind of negativity.

When BT Sport became TNT Sports, its longtime football host departed, and Laura Woods took over as the lead presenter for Premier League and Champions League coverage.

He started dedicating more time to his podcast, High Performance, where he talks to successful people about how they achieved their goals.

He faced a lot of criticism while working for BT Sport, now TNT Sports, and often received negative comments from viewers online.

In an interview with The Athletic, Jake shared his worries about online harassment and suggested he’s probably going to leave a profession that hasn’t made him happy.

I still react strongly to situations like this because I immediately worry that after a good, honest conversation, the media will focus on something negative. It’s frustrating because that kind of coverage just brings more criticism and negativity my way.

It can be discouraging, and you wonder if it’s even worth discussing. But I believe it’s important to share my experiences so others can avoid going through the same thing.

It’s tough when you’re just trying to make a living – working to cover bills, put food on the table, and pay the mortgage – and then you’re constantly criticized by people who wrongly assume things about you, like that you don’t support their team or aren’t good at what you do.

That experience really affected me. I struggle with handling criticism and negativity. I once asked Gary Lineker how he copes with it, and he told me he simply doesn’t let it bother him – it just doesn’t stick.

I’d usually say I wouldn’t let it bother me, but I really couldn’t. I’ve never been able to handle criticism well, especially when I don’t understand where it’s coming from. It’s one thing to think I’m not good at what I do, but some of the comments felt like outright bullying.

I’d need a truly compelling opportunity to return. I enjoy large-scale events that challenge me as a broadcaster, but the endless cycle of broadcasting football match after football match isn’t really appealing, now that I think about it.

Jake has been married to his wife Harriet since 2007.

Jake and Harriet first met at a Phats and Small concert at Liquid Nightclub in Norwich. Jake, a former BBC presenter, said he thought Harriet was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

Jake and his partner have two children, Florence and Sebastian. In August 2024, Jake shared a heartfelt message on Instagram celebrating their 25th anniversary as a couple.

He described Harriet as the most remarkable person he knew, praising her unwavering loyalty, kindness, humility, and unwavering support. He truly believed she was the best among them all.

Love begins with a spark, but it’s grown into a conscious decision for me, and Harriet, I choose you again and again. Happy anniversary! xxx
