Star Trek: Section 31 is bringing back a deep-cut alien race
As a seasoned gamer and Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the vast cosmos of the Federation, I find myself pleasantly intrigued by the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 series. While the initial response to its trailer was less than stellar, there’s one aspect that truly piqued my interest – the inclusion of Sam Richardson in the cast.
Star Trek: Section 31 has stirred up quite a bit of apprehension. The trailer was undeniably strong, but the response to it was predominantly unfavorable. However, among the aspects of the movie that many, myself included, appear to endorse is the casting of Sam Richardson. This versatile actor, who’s often known for his comedic roles, will team up with the Section 31 crew as Star Trek seeks to create their version of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Richardson possesses an undeniable charm that shines brightly in every scene he graces. There’s no question that he can breathe life into any character, provided the script provides him with suitable material. It appears that the writers for Section 31 are positioning him for success, as they’ve granted him a rare and distinctive trait: being an exceptionally unique alien character.
A being resembling the Chameleon-like aliens from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, who once made an appearance; let’s call them a Chameleon-alien for simplicity. If you’re not familiar with this alien race, they tried to create discord between Captain James Kirk and Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the series.
As a fervent admirer, I must share that previously, the enigmatic alien character was masterfully portrayed by none other than the legendary model, Iman. However, this time, it’s Richardson stepping into those extraterrestrial shoes. Transitioning from a modeling career to a comedic acting role isn’t something that escaped Richardson’s notice, as he candidly discussed on Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert podcast, as reported by TrekMovie.com.
“So I play a physicist shapeshifter, what’s called a Chameloid. This is the second time there’s ever been a Chameloid in Star Trek. The first time was Iman in Star Trek VI… It’s kind of funny, with Iman, it’s like this is a shapeshifter, you want to look, ‘Yeah, I’ll make myself Iman.’ And then in [Section 31] it’s like, ‘Oh good, I’m going to make myself Sam Richardson.’ [laughs]. I’m going to accept it.”
If the concept of reintroducing the Chameloid character seems sound, it suggests they couldn’t find or develop another extraterrestrial suitable for their intended role. However, trouble might have arisen if Richardson’s character belonged to the Changeling species.
Since these characters hadn’t been seen for approximately a century following the events of Section 31, introducing them could have sparked discontent among many fans. This is particularly true given their recent appearance in Star Trek: Picard.
It’s good to venture out and do something different.
