8 comfort shows like Gilmore Girls to watch right now

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of heartwarming TV shows that strike the perfect balance between humor and heart, I must say these recommendations have truly hit the spot! Having grown up with the enchanting world of Stars Hollow, it’s always a delight to find similar gems.

Gilmore Girls is an ideal show to unwind with. Browse the internet, and you’ll encounter fans who have rewatched this series multiple times for years. Some even watch it annually during fall for its unique atmosphere. It’s hard to top the brilliance of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s acclaimed series featuring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel.

Of course, I wouldn’t dream of asking you to give up your beloved series or disrupt long-standing traditions. However, should you be open to discovering another engaging TV show, we’ve got some top recommendations waiting for you!

We shared eight good TV shows to watch if you like Gilmore Girls, starting with New Girl!

New Girl

8 comfort shows like Gilmore Girls to watch right now

Although they both use the term “girl” in their names, the narratives, themes, and fundamental premises of “Gilmore Girls” and “New Girl” are quite distinct from each other. While “New Girl” leans heavily on humorous gags, fans of “Gilmore Girls” might still find appeal in “New Girl” for comparable reasons.

Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, has discovered her boyfriend’s infidelity and needs a fresh start. She decides to share a living space with three guys: Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick (Jake Johnson), and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.). Initially, Coach resides there but later departs, making room for Winston (Lamorne Morris) to join the household.

Similar to “Gilmore Girls” and “New Girl”, both shows have completed a run of seven seasons each. They make excellent choices for comedic viewing at present. Currently, you can stream the whole collection on Hulu and Disney+.

Virgin River

Virgin River is another fantastic comfort television series! While it’s not classified as a comedy, there’s plenty of humor to be found if you appreciate laughing at mishaps. In fact, add a laugh track to Virgin River, and I guarantee it would be the funniest show on TV!

The show follows the lives of residents in the quaint, rural town of Virgin River, bearing some resemblance to Stars Hollow but with a more remote setting. Alexandra Breckenridge plays Mel Monroe, a healthcare worker seeking fresh beginnings in this small community. As the story unfolds, she finds herself drawn into a romantic tale with Jack Sheridan, Virgin River’s most eligible bachelor, portrayed by Martin Henderson.

Currently, five seasons of ‘Virgin River’ are available on Netflix. As per updates from Netflix Life, season 6 of ‘Virgin River’ is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2024, which is earlier than previously announced (2025). It appears that the new season will be released later this year instead.

The Office

Without a doubt, “The Office” is a standout choice! It’s my all-time favorite television series. Similar to “Gilmore Girls,” “The Office” is another high-quality comfort show cherished by fans worldwide. I used to watch episodes of it practically every day. I’ve read comments online where people use the show as their nightly lullaby. Can anything be more soothing for TV than that?

In 2005, The Office made its debut on NBC, airing for a total of nine seasons on the network. This popular show centers around Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, and the intriguing employees at the Scranton office of Dunder Mifflin, a paper supply company operating within a specific region.

The popular comedy series “The Office,” created by Greg Daniels, features stars like Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, and BJ Novak, among others. Recognized as one of the most influential modern comedies, it’s a fantastic choice for viewers who will soon grow fond of these characters!

You can watch all nine seasons of The Office on Peacock right now.

Gossip Girl

The television series “Gossip Girl” serves as a great alternative for fans who enjoy the charm of “Gilmore Girls”. While it leans heavily towards drama rather than comedy, the compelling nature of its storylines makes it hard to resist.

In 2007, Gossip Girl made its debut on The CW and continued airing for a total of six seasons on this network. Coincidentally, Gilmore Girls was also popular at around the same time, which could give the impression that Gossip Girl originated from a similar era.

The show boasts an exceptional ensemble headed by Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Chase Crawford, Penn Badgley, Taylor Momsen, among others. It delves into the lives of privileged teenagers residing in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and the intricate soap operas that unfold within their circle. Additionally, there’s a mysterious figure who secretly observes them and disseminates their activities over the internet. Who might this shadowy character be?

Gossip Girl is available to stream on MAX right now.

Ted Lasso

Among all television shows ever made, none might be as innocent and heartwarming as “Ted Lasso.” This series was crafted by Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly. In the Apple TV+ show, Sudeikis and Hunt take on the roles of Ted Lasso, a fresh coach for AFC Richmond, and his assistant, Coach Beard.

The show chronicles Ted’s journey, a newcomer with minimal knowledge of soccer, who has been tasked with underperforming at AFC Richmond. However, he aims to win over his players, supporters, and club members through sheer people skills. It’s important to note that before this role, he was an American football coach. Despite his lack of familiarity with the sport, he cleverly employs his understanding of human dynamics to foster a strong team dynamic.

I’m a gaming enthusiast, and let me tell you, the comedy series I’m hooked on right now boasts an incredible cast: Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, and Nick Mohammed are the stars!

Initially, it seemed as though the show “Ted Lasso” was planning to conclude after its third season. However, now, discussions are underway for the entire cast and creative crew to come back for a potential fourth season.

Abbott Elementary

If you’re a fan of “The Office”, you’ll surely enjoy “Abbott Elementary”, a comedic TV show created and played by Quinta Brunson. This mockumentary follows the lives of teachers and staff at an elementary school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The series also has an incredible cast, including Jenna James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, William Stanford Davis, and more.

Currently, Abbott Elementary stands out as the most hilarious and exceptional comedy series airing on television today. There’s hardly any competition in this category, if at all.

At present, you can find three seasons of “Abbot Elementary” on both Hulu and Disney+ for streaming. The fourth season of “Abbot Elementary” will debut on October 9, 2024. Make sure to catch up before the new season starts!

Sweet Magnolias

For fans of Gilmore Girls, Sweet Magnolias undoubtedly earns a place on the cozy television roster. While it’s not as comedic as Gilmore Girls or as intense as Virgin River, it remains a series centered around women navigating life, relationships, and personal growth in a quaint community.

As a gamer stepping into the world of this captivating series, I find myself taking on the role of Maddie Townsend, a dedicated mother navigating life in the quaint town of Serenity. Alongside my trusty companions Dane Sue and Helen, we’re not just playing games – we’re building a family and forging friendships that make this small town our home.

The series is based on the book series of the same name by Sherryl Woods.

Currently, you can find three installments of Sweet Magnolias streaming on Netflix. It’s expected that the fourth season of this popular Netflix Original will hit the platform shortly!

Emily in Paris

Without a doubt, “Emily in Paris” is an ideal pick for enthusiasts of “Gilmore Girls” who seek a comforting TV series. This captivating show on Netflix has stood out as one of the best programs since its debut in 2021.

In this adaptation, Lily Collins takes on the role of Emily, venturing to Paris for a marketing job. This major transition introduces Emily to fresh faces, foreign customs, and potential romance. The acclaimed comedy ensemble includes Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, among others, under the guidance of Darren Star.

At present, the series is halfway through its fourth run. The initial part of this season was made available in August 2024. The remaining episodes will be released on September 12, giving you ample time to watch the previous episodes! If you haven’t already, you can stream the first three seasons on Netflix.

This collection of cozy series might be just what you need if you’re a fan of Gilmore Girls! We hope our suggestions have introduced you to some fresh viewing options.
