Before Nathan Fillion became known as John Nolan in The Rookie in 2018, he played a police officer in a role many have forgotten. He’s been a key part of the show’s most popular episodes throughout its eight seasons. The Rookie has been a big success for ABC, leading to two spin-off series: the brief The Rookie: Feds and the upcoming The Rookie: North.
Before becoming known as John Nolan, Nathan Fillion had already played several popular TV characters, like Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly, Rick Castle in Castle, and Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Because these roles are so well-remembered, people often forget he also appeared in a single episode of a truly classic TV show.
Nathan Fillion Played Kate’s Cop Husband In Lost Season 3
In the 2006 Lost episode “I Do” (season 3, episode 6), Nathan Fillion played Kevin Callis, a police officer who Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) impulsively married while trying to escape the authorities. Kevin was a good and devoted husband, but he didn’t know Kate was actually a fugitive and had been using the name Monica. For a while, Kate truly enjoyed their life together and even tried to stop the US Marshal (played by Fredric Lane) from continuing the search for her.
Kate realized she couldn’t keep up the pretense any longer. Without a passport and after confirming she wasn’t pregnant, she decided to run away again. She confessed the truth to Kevin, but gave him a drug to delay him from pursuing her. Before leaving, she left behind the locket Kevin’s mother had given her at their wedding. This was the last time Kevin appeared in the show; he wasn’t featured in any subsequent episodes or seasons.
Lost Should’ve Brought Nathan Fillion Back In Later Seasons
Kevin was a strong character in a memorable Lost episode, and it’s a shame he didn’t reappear later in the series. It would have been fascinating to see how he’d respond to Kate’s return to the outside world as one of the Oceanic Six, considering their complicated past. He might have sought revenge for Kate’s betrayal, particularly after she was exonerated, or he could have chosen to forgive her and move on.
Bringing Kevin back wasn’t just about revisiting a familiar face; it could have helped Kate truly make amends for her past. Facing him and taking responsibility for her actions – without resorting to manipulation or avoidance – would have shown significant character development. This would have also mirrored Jack’s storyline, as he briefly reconnected with his ex-wife Sarah while hospitalized, offering a similar emotional parallel.

Alternatively, they could have brought Kevin into the flash-sideways storyline, connecting his appearance to Kate’s process of remembering her past and finding peace. The show had previously featured other minor characters – even those who only appeared briefly – within those scenes.
When Castle started in 2009, it was difficult to arrange for Nathan Fillion to reappear on Lost near the end of its run. However, Fillion is a very talented actor, and his single Lost episode didn’t fully showcase his character, Kevin. Had he returned, it could have deepened Kevin’s story and added layers to Kate’s as well. Even though this didn’t happen, playing a police officer on Lost ultimately prepared him for the role of John Nolan years later.
