‘It’ Director Confirms Epic Supercut of Stephen King Epic Still in the Works

This has been a great week for Stephen King fans! Not only was the It: Welcome to Derry project officially announced, but more Pennywise is on the way. King is known for writing captivating stories that are often quite long and detailed. Because of this, the first adaptation of It was a two-part miniseries, and when Andy Muschietti adapted it for the big screen, it was also divided into two movies.

Despite the nearly four-hour combined length of the two It movies, director Andy Muschietti and his sister Barbara had to remove some plot points – some of which actually improved the films. For years, they’ve hinted at combining both movies into a single, extended cut. While they’ve been working on the spin-off series It: Welcome to Derry, they recently confirmed to /Film that the supercut is still planned. Andy Muschietti explained to the website:

The show is our main focus right now, even more than creating a longer, combined cut of footage. We’re at a point where we can ask the studio for help, but timing is everything. They seem supportive, and we’ve already made significant progress – we’re fully committed to making a second season of ‘Welcome to Derry,’ alongside pursuing other film projects. We’re definitely moving forward with it.

Andy Muschietti isn’t the only one wondering what’s next. After the huge success of the first It, which became the highest-grossing horror film ever, he and Barbara quickly made It Chapter Two. They then moved on to the DC universe with The Flash. While The Flash had the potential to revitalize the ‘Snyderverse,’ delays and problems during production ultimately seemed to signal the end of that particular DC storyline.

Ultimately, their hard work succeeded: Andy Muschietti will direct The Brave and the Bold as part of James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe.

The new supercut of It is just the latest example of fans getting more from their favorite movies by combining multiple films into one. Last year, Quentin Tarantino did something similar with Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2, releasing them together as The Whole Bloody Affair. While it was impressive, the combined version wasn’t a huge departure from the original films.

Director Andy Muschietti has hinted that his planned combination of the two films won’t just be a simple merging. He aims to restructure the story and include new scenes to create a cohesive narrative. In a recent interview, Muschietti confirmed he’s working to weave the two movies together, adding extra footage – some of which still needs to be filmed – to fill gaps and create a smoother, unified story.

As a big fan of both films, this It supercut feels less like simply combining the two movies and more like the kind of expanded vision Zack Snyder ultimately got to explore with his Justice League. It’s still unclear if it’ll hit theaters or go straight to streaming, but I’m definitely excited. And while we’re waiting for more It, it sounds like we can also look forward to It: Welcome to Derry eventually – that’s fantastic news!
