Elon Musk gets dunked on by a Star Trek icon

As a long-time admirer of both Elon Musk and Star Trek, I find myself torn between my admiration for their respective achievements and my dismay at the current state of affairs.

How can you transform a 70-year-old actor into a legend like one of the NBA’s greatest players? By emulating what countless basketball players did for Lebron James and providing him with a high pass for a dunk. These days, Elon Musk is a highly debated figure. Originally admired for his maverick attitude and personal funding of unconventional scientific ventures, he has lost that image recently.

His children face problems with him, his public persona has been appropriated by the alt-right movement, and the image of him as a free-spirited entrepreneur has been severely tarnished due to a poorly maintained website and trucks that appear to have frequent, critical malfunctions. The pedals falling off and getting jammed…that appears problematic. While I’ve never engineered a vehicle, it seems that such issues could be potentially dangerous rather than desired design features.

What do I know.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness when I think about Elon Musk. Once a beacon of innovation and progress, it seems he’s lost some of his sparkle, making his dream of taking humanity to the stars even more poignant. The vision he’s selling isn’t quite aligning with the ideals portrayed in Star Trek, despite his deep-seated yearning for it. He even expressed this desire on Twitter, advocating for a real-life Starfleet Academy – an ambitious dream, given that the series of the same name is now in production.

Yet, one Star Trek legend just had to remind Musk that he isn’t the guy to make Starfleet a reality. Not anymore. Robert Picardo, who brilliantly played The Doctor for seven seasons on Star Trek: Voyager and will once again reprise that role in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, took to Twitter/X to reject Musk’s idea, with the Star Trek icon saying;

“First step : Support a leader that embodies Starfleet values like diversity, inclusion and ethical behavior”.

Based on Musk’s personal, political, and professional allegiances, it appears straightforward to conclude that he often faces criticism from the public. His opinions, conduct, and certain actions have frequently drawn scrutiny and even been labeled as questionable.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but think that if we ever want to create a Starfleet-like entity, it certainly shouldn’t be spearheaded by an individual like Musk, whose reputation has taken quite a hit in the years before and after acquiring Twitter.
