Lloyd Owen and Ema Horvath tease how their characters grieve for Isildur in The Rings of Power season 2
As a lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth and its rich lore, I can hardly contain my excitement as we inch closer to the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power season 2 on Prime Video! Having attended countless conventions, I’ve had the privilege of meeting several cast members in person, and their passion for this world is truly infectious.
Hard to believe, but tomorrow marks the beginning of season 2 for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video! I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach this long-awaited premiere. In the run-up to this grand event, we’ve been sharing exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes content from the cast of the show (you can find a few of them at the end of this post).
In Horvath’s own words, when things began, Isildur was already deceased, and we both assumed he was gone for good. At the time, I was deeply mourning and enraged, while my father, ever composed, concealed his feelings more than usual. There was a great deal of annoyance within me due to what I perceived as inappropriate handling of the loss by someone else.
As a gamer immersed in this world, I’ve noticed a deep-rooted schism within Númenórean society even before the story begins. This division, though complex, will inevitably find its way into our personal lives. If you’re not part of the tribal perspective, one might say that the nationalists have a compelling argument. They question, “If Elves can live forever, why can’t we?” After all, we share a common ancestry with them. Couldn’t that eternal life be a possibility for us too?
“We went to war because of Galadriel, she’s chasing the wrong thing. So all of that plays into this particular relationship. And the other thing that they’ve done brilliantly was set up, you know, a widowed man trying to bring up some orphan children,” Lloyd continued. “So all that grief plays into so much and the grief of losing Isildur and a father who is, as you say, stoic enough that I don’t think he can feel anymore at the beginning, it’s too painful to open that up. So they’re not really communicating.”
Horvath mentioned that there is a specific scene with Lloyd that she’s eager for viewers to watch, as they’ve been discussing it for months, and it plays a crucial role since “things seem to reach a climax.” Regarding the showrunners, they’ve hinted at Rings of Power having a five-year plan. Now, I wonder if the actors are aware of how long they will be part of this series, and if that’s indeed the case?
Lloyd mentioned that as a cast, we’ve been asked to work on season three. However, we’re still unsure when production will begin. Lloyd believes the writers have already mapped out the entire storyline for the season when they initially conceived and wrote the idea. On the other hand, Horvath stated she knows her character Eärien’s overall arc, but is unaware of the specific details on how to reach that point. That uncertainty, according to her, adds an exciting element to the process.
