Armie Hammer sells truck he loved 'intensely' at CarMax: 'Can't afford the gas' in L.A.

As a film enthusiast with decades of immersion in the industry, I have witnessed the rise and fall of many talented actors. The story of Armie Hammer, once a promising star who graced our screens in “The Social Network” and “Call Me By Your Name,” is a sobering reminder of the harsh realities that sometimes befall even the most gifted artists.

A fresh start for Armie Hammer: He’s parted ways with his cherished pickup truck, an outcome linked to the aftermath of sexual assault accusations and the cannibalism controversy that derailed his promising acting journey.

On Tuesday, the actor known for roles in “The Social Network” and “Call Me By Your Name” shared a relatable video of himself selling his four-door pickup truck at CarMax. This actor, who recently moved to a new apartment in Los Angeles, admitted that he was struggling to afford gas for his vehicle. To save costs, the great-grandson of oil tycoon Armand Hammer traded it in for a compact hybrid car, stating that he would likely only spend around $10 on gas per month with this new vehicle.

“He was reassuring himself that parking would become less of a hassle and gas prices would go down,” he thought.

The actor who starred in “Death on the Nile” continues to struggle with the consequences of the scandal that erupted against him in 2021, as multiple accusations of sexual abuse and assault were made against him. Despite his consistent denials of any nonconsensual sexual activity, he has lately dismissed rumors about his supposed cannibalistic inclinations with a chuckle. Remarkably, he expressed gratitude that the allegations effectively ended his career.

The car sale is apparently his latest attempt to pick up the pieces.

“He mentioned on Tuesday’s Instagram post that it has been around two weeks since he returned to Los Angeles,” and the video seemed to show a GMC Sierra Denali parked in a CarMax parking lot.

“This vehicle you see here is my truck. I acquired it in 2017, treating myself to it as a special Christmas present – given that I’ve owned pickup trucks for years. It has been a source of great joy for me, and I have taken it on numerous camping trips and cross-country journeys over long stretches.”

He went on to say, “For a final drive, I took my truck to Carmax.” However, this isn’t an endorsement for Carmax. Instead, it’s because I’m getting rid of my truck.

Representatives for CarMax did not immediately respond Wednesday to The Times’ request for comment.

Hammer stated that he won’t seek financial aid from his affluent relatives due to financial concerns. He mentioned that since his return to Los Angeles, he has been spending around $400 to $500 on fuel for his vehicle, but currently cannot continue doing so because it’s too expensive.

According to him, the sale took place on his 38th birthday this past Wednesday and suggested a fresh start for the beleaguered celebrity, symbolizing new beginnings.

He mentioned in the video that he’s embarking on a fresh chapter with a new car, new apartment, and a new life in Los Angeles. Yet, he expressed regret over selling his old car, teasingly bemoaning its departure as if it were a cherished possession, calling it “my baby.” He added that his children aren’t thrilled about the change because of the many fond memories they shared in the vehicle.

Even after their divorce in 2023, Dwayne Johnson (the Hammer) continues to aid his children financially with his ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers. A court mandate requires him to contribute $1,500 per month for child support due to his lack of sufficient income to pay more. According to the New York Post, Johnson took a job in timeshare sales in the Cayman Islands during 2022 as a means to cover expenses.
