AfrAId hits theaters, Trap comes to VOD, and 3 other new horror titles out this week

Well, as a die-hard horror fan who’s seen more slasher movies than I care to admit, it’s been a bittersweet week with the conclusion of “Evil” on Paramount+. But fear not, my fellow fright fans! There’s always a new terror around the corner, and this week is no exception.

This week is quite disappointing for horror enthusiasts as the outstanding Paramount+ series Evil has concluded. Thursday evenings will seem lacking without it, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the show could be revived on another streaming service, so let’s hope for the best!

Moreover, not only that, but there are some fascinating new horror releases this week. For instance, the Netflix Original movie titled “The Deliverance” and the Blumhouse/Sony collaboration sci-fi thriller called “AfrAId“. Additionally, for those who have been eagerly anticipating it, M. Night Shyamalan’s title “Trap” will be available on PVOD for home viewing.

AfrAId (Theaters, Aug. 30)

In this Blumhouse sci-fi horror movie, John Cho plays a member of a family selected to experiment with an advanced technological innovation. The AI system in question promises to significantly simplify their daily routines.

Initially, AIA functions flawlessly, but as depicted in the trailer, events start to spiral out of control when she attempts to assert more and more authority over the family, leading to disastrous consequences. AfrAId bears some resemblance to recent AI-themed films such as M3GAN, yet I’m always eager for a fresh John Cho production.

Out Comes the Wolves (Theater/VOD, Aug. 30)

A new movie produced by IFC Films and Shudder is set to debut in selected cinemas and digital platforms this week. This edge-of-your-seat survival thriller, directed by Adam MacDonald, focuses on a man, his friend, and the friend’s fiancé who embark on a camping trip in the wilderness, only to be attacked by a group of wolves, leaving them to battle for their survival.

The Deliverance (Netflix, Aug. 30)

Following a restricted cinema release, “The Deliverance” is set to premiere worldwide exclusively on Netflix this week. The chilling possession horror movie marks the reunion of director Lee Daniels and actress Mo’Nique since their Academy Award-winning 2009 film “Precious.” Based on the real-life Ammons family haunting, “The Deliverance” tells the story of a mother who becomes convinced that her children have been possessed after they move into a new home.

Slingshot (VOD, Aug. 30)

In this chilling sci-fi movie, the filmmaker behind 1408, Mikael Håfström, takes the helm again. The story revolves around Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne, members of a space crew aboard a vessel bound for Saturn’s moon Titan. As they perform a risky “slingshot” maneuver, one astronaut starts questioning his perception of reality.

Trap (PVOD, Aug. 30)

This Friday, M. Night Shyamalan’s highly anticipated psychological thriller titled “Trap” will be available for Premium Video On Demand (PVOD), giving those who missed seeing Josh Hartnett portray a chilling serial killer as The Butcher the opportunity to watch the movie from the comfort of their homes.

In Hartnett’s narrative, Cooper Adams, concealing his identity as a serial killer, accompanies his little girl to an extensive concert, which was performed by Saleka Night Shyamalan. However, it transpires that the authorities, including the police and FBI, had anticipated his presence at this event and had meticulously orchestrated an intricate ambush to apprehend The Butcher, intending to prevent him from committing further murders.
