Is there a way to fix the awful James Kirk death from Star Trek Generations?
As a dedicated Star Trek fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that “Star Trek Generations” holds a special place in the franchise’s history. It served as the conclusion for the original series, while simultaneously marking the beginning of the films based on “The Next Generation.” What made this film even more remarkable was the debut of both Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, and Captain Picard, portrayed by Patrick Stewart, sharing the screen together for the first time. This unprecedented encounter between the two captains, emblems of Star Trek, is a moment I never thought I’d witness.
In this scenario, Captain James Kirk (played by Shatner) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (portrayed by Stewart) from Star Trek join forces to combat Tolian Soran, who aims to enter the Nexus. The movie, while well-made overall, didn’t quite live up to expectations in its climactic third act. Eventually, Kirk, played brilliantly by Malcolm McDowell as Soran, meets his match, leading to Kirk’s demise and Shatner’s last onscreen appearance in Star Trek.
The manner of Kirk’s demise in the movie was frequently the most contentious aspect due to its lack of heroism. With the collapsing metallic framework serving as his backdrop, he desperately held on for survival until the structure gave way and sent him plummeting down a mountain, an undignified end for such a character.
The scene has been widely criticized as a significant flaw in the movie, leading Cinemablend to query Shatner about potential changes. Nevertheless, Shatner acknowledges that the moment has passed, stating that it’s no longer relevant.
“Probably not. The moment’s over. It’s done. I did the best I could. I would like to have another couple of shots at it. But, and then when I say this is what I meant, I’ve heard people say just actually just before you came on. No, no, I got that. That’s what I got. So, you know, it enters the area. Uh, bullshit. Sounds cruel. This is the area of fantasy.”
1. It wasn’t perfect how Captain Kirk, portrayed by Shatner, departed from the Star Trek series. Frankly, it was almost incompetent the way they handled that scene. Regrettably, no matter how poorly executed it was, you can’t rewrite that pivotal moment from the show’s chronology. You would need to go back and selectively change or reshoot certain scenes if you wanted to alter it, but that isn’t an option.
If you decide to cleanse the canon timeline, however, there are more egregious moments in Star Trek that should be undone beyond the death of Kirk. So while Kirk’s death is not great, it’s beyond settled at this point. The only thing you can do right now is try and give Chris Pine’s Kirk a better sendoff, should that be the direction they go in for the fourth film.
