Wilson Cruz has an idea about what Dr. Culber could bring to Starfleet Academy

As a long-time Trek fan who has witnessed the evolution of the Star Trek universe, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of seeing Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) grace the halls of the 32nd century Starfleet Academy. Having followed his journey from Discovery to the bridge of the Enterprise, I have come to appreciate the depth and wisdom he brings to the table.

In the forthcoming Star Trek franchise’s new series, Starfleet Academy, which is situated in the 32nd century, there’s an opportunity for characters from Star Trek: Discovery to reappear. Currently, Commander Reno [Tig Notaro], Lt. Tilly [Mary Wiseman], and Admiral Vance [Oded Fehr] have been confirmed to be a part of the series in different roles. However, this leaves room for other stars from Star Trek: Discovery to join the cast as well.

Wilson Cruz, who portrayed Dr. Hugh Culber throughout the entire series, was asked by Trekmovie about potential roles for his character at Starfleet Academy, if such an opportunity were to arise. Not only has Cruz pondered this possibility, but he also has a creative idea for how Dr. Culber could be incorporated into the show.

Onboard Discovery, Cruz served dual roles as both the ship’s doctor and counselor. He would make an excellent mentor for students considering careers in counseling. Interestingly, although Cruz didn’t explicitly suggest this, inviting Dr. Culber to the academy periodically could offer valuable learning experiences, particularly for cadets grappling with questions about their identity and whether they truly belong in Starfleet.

Yeah! I think he’s kind of the perfect person to guide the cadets who want to be counselors, to help them lean into their strengths in terms of their own empathy, their willingness, their ability to listen, when it’s appropriate to challenge when it’s not. [laughs] I would love to see him play that kind of role that allows young people who are taking on new challenges to listen to their instincts, which is a hard thing to do when you’re young, because you don’t actually think you know anything. You have this bravura that says that you do, but inside you have the insecurity of like, “Can I do this? Do I know how to do this? Will I succeed?” I’d love to see him do that.

1. Dr. Culber from Discovery is an exceptionally empathetic character who could significantly contribute, even in a smaller role, to guide the cadets, helping them discover their unique potential for Starfleet. Not only that, but seeing him with Tilly once more would be delightful! However, it’s worth mentioning that no hints have been dropped about Cruz’s character gracing Starfleet Academy. Yet, it seems like a missed chance not to make use of this possibility!
