The first look at the new Yellowstone prequel, Dutton Ranch, was released this week, and fans are excited.
The scene was full of action, with Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) – a married couple on the show – teaming up to take down dangerous criminals.
The dramatic video opens with a gray dead hand of a buried body popping out from the ground.
Dutton Ranch is a new series that will continue the story after Yellowstone, which concluded in December 2024.
The new nine-episode series will launch on Paramount+ on May 15th. The first two episodes will be available immediately, and then one new episode will be released each week.
The preview shows Beth and Rip starting a new life in South Texas, after leaving Montana and the ranch that Beth’s father owned.
Oh my god, you will NOT believe this! Rip found a body – a dead body – buried right on their ranch, the 7000-acre Yellowstone! Then, total chaos – a huge brawl broke out, fists flying everywhere! And then I saw Beth… she had a gun! It’s all because of those nasty people from the other ranch, they’re causing all the trouble! I’m seriously on the edge of my seat!
‘What a day,’ Beth says to which Rip replies, ‘Welcome to Texas.’
Also seen was Rip and Beth’s son Carter played by Finn Little.
Making their debut were Hollywood veterans Ed Harris and Annette Bening.
Bening plays Beulah Jackson, the cunning owner of a rival ranch who faces off with Beth.
Beth says to the character played by Bening, while they’re talking in a living room, ‘It’s wonderful to leave something behind, but only if it lasts.’ The film also stars Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind.
Dutton Ranch was developed by Chad Feehan, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner. The show’s characters were originally created by executive producers Sheridan and John Linson.
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe has expanded with several shows. These include the prequel series 1883 and 1923, and the sequel series The Madison, featuring Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox. Another sequel, Marshalls, will star Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton.
The show Yellowstone, which launched the popular franchise, finished its run last year, but its star, Kevin Costner, didn’t appear in the final episodes.
Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, was written off the show in a November 2024 episode following a disagreement with the series creator, Taylor Sheridan.
Costner was suddenly removed from the show after a difficult departure stemming from clashes with the filming schedule of his Western film series, Horizon.
The show ran for one more month after filming in Yellowstone finished, concluding with its fifth and last season.
After Kevin Costner left the show, Luke Grimes – who played his on-screen son, Kayce Dutton – revealed they didn’t speak for another month, following reports of friction between them.
He told Men’s Health in December 2024 that they haven’t spoken since. He clarified it wasn’t due to any bad blood, but simply because the other person is Kevin Costner.
He chuckled and said, ‘He’s very important. I have his number, but I don’t think it’s right for me to contact him. If he wants to get in touch, he knows how.’
We were all surprised by how things unfolded, though there had been rumors of trouble brewing beforehand.
‘But just, like, in life, man, these things happen. They happen fast and they’re not predictable.’
Grimes drew a parallel between Costner’s unexpected departure and the unforeseen nature of his father’s death years prior, suggesting both were events he couldn’t have predicted.
He shared that his father passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. He explained that life often throws unexpected challenges at people, forcing them to make difficult choices. In the context of the show ‘Yellowstone,’ this personal loss served as a catalyst, accelerating the dramatic intensity and bringing things to a head.
He explained that Kevin Costner’s departure after almost eight years felt like a definitive end to the show, Yellowstone.
When he didn’t return, it felt like a critical moment – ‘we really need to take control of the situation now,’ he explained to People magazine in November 2024.
From the beginning, it felt inevitable that the family’s patriarch would leave. The story always seemed to be about how his children and the rest of the family would cope with losing their central figure, their support system.
The new show, Marshals, which focuses on John Dutton’s son Kayce – a former Navy SEAL – immediately honors his father’s legacy.
According to People, Kayce’s friend and former teammate Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) pointed out, ‘After all the tough stuff you’ve done, you never said you were wealthy like the Rockefellers from Montana.’
‘That was the best part about being a SEAL. Being a Dutton didn’t matter,’ Kayce replied.
