PFL Playoffs: Brendan Loughnane vs. Kai Kamaka results & highlights

As a seasoned MMA enthusiast with over two decades of watching these fights, I must say that the 2024 PFL Championships are shaping up to be a spectacle like no other! Having witnessed countless bouts and seen fighters rise and fall, I can confidently predict that these semifinals will not disappoint.

Eight combatants across four different weight divisions have secured a spot in the 2024 Professional Fighters League (PFL) Championships. This means that just two divisional semi-finals remain, with the mixed martial artists competing fiercely to transform their lives by winning the $1 million finals.

On August 23rd, this coming Friday, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) will make their way to Washington D.C., marking the final round of semifinal clashes. In the headliner, featherweight contender Brendan Loughnane aims to carry on his path towards a second $1 million award. However, it won’t be an easy task as he faces the consistently threatening Kai Kamaka III.

2024 saw Loughnane’s campaign shine brightly, knocking out both Justin Gonzales and Pedro Carvalho. On the other hand, Kamaka, a powerful fighter from Hawaii, debuted in his first PFL season. He advanced to the semifinals by securing unanimous decision wins against both Pedro Carvalho and Bubba Jenkins.

The victor of Loughnane vs Kamaka will face either Gabriel Braga or Timur Khizriev next. Last year, Braga lost by TKO in the third round during the championship fight against Jesus Pinedo. However, he recovered with knockout/technical knockout wins over Justin Gonzales and Jenkins in 2024.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at Khizriev’s impressive debut season in the PFL after transitioning from Bellator. His dominance was evident as he clinched unanimous decision victories against Brett Johns and Enrique Barzola.

During the welterweight semifinals, three Russian fighters and an underestimated Brazilian are participating. In Friday’s co-main event, the unbeaten Magomed Umalatov, a strong contender for the tournament victory, will compete. However, Umalatov must overcome the challenging Neiman Gracie who aims for an upset.

Originally, it wasn’t planned that Gracie would reach the semifinals due to his victory over Don Madge (by unanimous decision) followed by his loss against Goiti Yamauchi. However, luck came into play as Madge sustained an injury and withdrew from his match against Umalatov, offering a valuable chance to Gracie.

Umalatov’s journey to the 2024 PFL Playoffs was less complicated. The 32-year-old outpointed Andrey Koreshkov and subsequently submitted Brennan Ward with a first-round anaconda choke, sending ripples throughout the entire division.

In their opening bout for the main card, Shamil Musaev and Murad Ramazanov will square off. These Russian welterweights previously clashed in June during the regular season, with Musaev delivering a second-round knockout. Now, Ramazanov aims to repay the favor in the playoffs.

Apart from the initial encounter, Musaev additionally clinched a victory over Logan Storley via a second-round Technical Knockout. Regarding Ramazanov, he secured his place in the playoffs with a first-round submission triumph against Laureano Staropoli.

Previously in the evening, ten combatants were set to showcase their skills during the non-tournament opening acts. In one of the main preliminary bouts, two-time PFL welterweight champion Ray Cooper III aims to snap a losing streak by defeating Mukhamed Berkhamov who is making his promotional debut.

One fight to keep a close eye on is a featherweight matchup between Tyler Diamond and Enrique Barzola. Both fighters possess action-packed styles and the inability to give up, which should lead to an entertaining war during the preliminary portion. Don’t overlook this scrap.

Here are three fights lined up for the undercard: Jesse Stirn versus Jose Perez (in the featherweight category), Maxwell Djantou Nana against Kent Mafileo (heavyweights), and Shido Boris Esperanca vs. Tyler Hill (welterweights). You can find the overall event results further below.
