As a long-time fan of Judge Mathis and his captivating courtroom drama, I must admit that the news of his divorce from Linda after nearly four decades together came as a bit of a shock. The couple, who met during their college days, seemed like an unbreakable duo to me, embodying the epitome of love and commitment.

After nearly four decades, Judge Greg Mathis and his spouse, Linda Yvette Mathis, have decided to separate.

Linda Mathis, wife of the “Judge Mathis” TV personality, filed for divorce on Thursday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, stating “unresolvable differences” as the cause of their separation, as reported by The Times based on court records they examined.

In the records, she indicated their separation date as July 17th and mentioned they have no children underage. Additionally, she applied for alimony and requested that the court waive her husband’s ability to seek support from her. It remains undetermined whether the couple had a premarital agreement prior to marriage.

She also requested that Greg Mathis cover her legal fees.

On Friday, neither side provided an immediate response when The Times asked for a comment.

They got married in 1985, over 14 years before Judge Mathis’ debut on television. This court show, focusing on arbitration, aired from September 13, 1999, to May 25, 2023, spanning an impressive 24 seasons. It received the NAACP Image Award for outstanding news, talk, or information series in 2004 and won a Daytime Emmy for best legal/courtroom program in 2018.

As a seasoned movie critic, I find myself marveling at the illustrious career of Judge Mathis, who stands tall as the longest-running Black male television host and second to none in courtroom TV history, surpassed only by the legendary “Judge Judy.” In 2022, his remarkable journey culminated with the well-deserved bestowal of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Shortly following the termination of his self-titled series by Warner Bros. last year, Mathis revealed plans to host a fresh courtroom program titled “Judge Mathis in Court,” produced by Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group.

In the year 2022, he was featured alongside his spouse, four kids, and numerous grandkids (all residing in Los Angeles) on the documentary series titled “The Mathis Family Matters”.
