House of the Dragon one of the few new titles to break into Nielsen’s latest streaming chart
As a seasoned gamer and avid streamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of many digital entertainment empires, I must say that this Nielsen report is an intriguing snapshot of the ever-evolving streaming landscape. The dominance of Netflix, Disney+, and now HBO Max with House of the Dragon is no surprise, but the resurgence of classic shows like Family Guy and Grey’s Anatomy still holds a special place in our hearts.
When it comes to providing accurate TV viewership statistics, Nielsen is unquestionably a trusted name in the industry. However, due to the time required to process and analyze all the data, we’ve only just received the streaming ratings for the week spanning from Monday, July 22, through Sunday, July 28.
Last week saw the airing of episode six in the second season of HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” titled “Smallfolk.” That week, HBO’s prequel series to “Game of Thrones” garnered impressive viewership, surpassing a billion minutes watched. However, it was outperformed by the debut of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” on Netflix, the premiere episodes from season six and final season of “Cobra Kai” on Netflix, and “Bluey” on Disney+, which parents often rely on to keep their kids entertained. Here’s a list of the top 10 most-watched shows that week:
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Netflix), 1.405 billion minutes viewed
- Bluey (Disney+), 1.064 billion
- Cobra Kai (Netflix), 1.048 billion
- House of the Dragon (Max), 1.039 (vs 1.23 billion)
- Family Guy (Hulu), 1.032 billion
- Grey’s Anatomy (Hulu/Netflix), 923 million
- NCIS (Netflix/Paramount+), 819 million
- All American (Netflix), 799 million
- Dexter (Netflix/Paramount+), 798 million
- Criminal Minds (Hulu/Paramount+), 750 million
It’s worth mentioning that just three shows are newly released – “House of the Dragon”, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, and “Cobra Kai”. The rest of the viewing was primarily older or previously obtained content, which we all seem to adore for its timeless charm.
Nielsen also released its list of the top 10 most watched streaming services in July. Behold:
- YouTube
- Netflix
- Prime Video
- Hulu
- Disney+
- Tubi
- Roku
- Peacock
- Max
- Paramount+
These streaming platforms – YouTube, Tubi, Roku, Prime Video (included with Amazon Prime), Peacock (which saw a surge after the Olympics), and Netflix – are commonly used due to their free or mostly free options. However, despite the success of shows like House of the Dragon, Warner Bros. Discovery might not be satisfied as Max ranked ninth in comparison.
In addition, it’s important to note that having a watch doesn’t automatically mean profitability. For instance, platforms such as Prime Video, Netflix, Max, and Disney+ generate the majority of their income from subscription fees, all boasting over 100 million subscribers each. The streaming competition seems to be losing its novelty.
