Daisy Ridley to be honored at the 50th Deauville Film Festival

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of Star Wars characters over the years, I must say that Daisy Ridley’s journey mirrors that of a level-up in an epic role-playing game. From her humble beginnings as a scavenger Rey to becoming the Hollywood Rising Star, she has undeniably proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with.

I’ve been thrilled to be an integral piece of the Star Wars universe, ever since I made my daring entrance by rappelling into a Star Destroyer in “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”. My portrayal of scavenger Rey has garnered me recognition, with nominations at the Saturn Awards and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists EDA Female Focus Award. Not only that, but I’ve also been honored as a breakthrough artist in events like the Empire Awards and the Dublin Film Critics Circle Awards. Now, I’m humbled to be acknowledged by the Deauville Film Festival as a significant contributor to Hollywood.

According to Variety, Ridley has been chosen as this year’s Hollywood Rising Star at the festival. She will be joining other recipients of this honor such as Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones, Ana de Armas from Knives Out, and Jessica Chastain who starred in Interstellar.

As a film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Ridley Scott is having an exceptionally fruitful phase in her career. The recent acquisition of “Magpie,” which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival, by Shout! Studios for North American distribution, is a testament to this fact. Not only that, but Disney+ has also picked up another one of her titles, “The Young Woman and the Sea,” detailing the remarkable journey of the first woman to swim the English Channel.

Fans particularly excited about her character from the sequel trilogy are eagerly awaiting the upcoming “Rey Skywalker” movie that was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration. Directed by Shameen Obaid-Chinoy, this film, scheduled fifteen years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” is currently in production.

The actress also shared with Women’s Health magazine that she’s been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition marked by excessive thyroid activity. Initially, she thought her poor health was due to the emotional strain of filming the intense Magpie, but a doctor described her as “exhausted yet restless.” She copes with it through meditation and a more conscious diet, and after receiving the diagnosis, she opted for a gluten-free lifestyle.

Ridley plans on attending the Deauville Film Festival, which takes place from September 8-15, 2024.
