Oprah Winfrey steps up for Kamala Harris at the DNC
CHICAGO —
As a seasoned movie critic with a lifetime of experiencing the power of storytelling and the resilience of the human spirit, I must say that Oprah Winfrey‘s speech at the Democratic National Convention was nothing short of cinematic. Her words were like a well-crafted screenplay, filled with emotion, conviction, and a clear call to action for our nation.
On Wednesday, iconic talk show host and businesswoman Oprah Winfrey unexpectedly delivered a speech in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, at their party’s convention, causing great excitement among the audience.
Stepping onto the stage at the Democratic National Convention in a striking purple suit reminiscent of Harris, I found myself swept away by the melodious strains of Jon Batiste’s “Freedom.” As I spoke, my words resonated with themes of individual liberty that echoed powerfully throughout the night.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I recently found myself reflecting on the unwavering commitment of the Democratic party in safeguarding our fundamental rights, which often come under fire. Without naming their political adversary, it’s clear that they stand firm in their resolve to protect our values.
She stated, “Some individuals aim to make it appear as if the nation is divided into ‘us’ versus ‘them’. They seek to instill fear and exert control. These people want you to view books as threatening while considering assault rifles as safe. They suggest there’s a correct way to practice faith and an incorrect way to express love.”
In her appeals to those who are undecided or independent, Oprah Winfrey articulated that the decision between Harris and Trump boils down to choosing allegiance to the Constitution over devotion to any single person.
She proposed, “Instead of embracing foolishness, let’s opt for practicality – that’s the essence of our nation.” She continued, “Rather than revisiting the past with its bitterness, let’s look forward to a future filled with hope. … We won’t go back.”
Winfrey also came to defense of those criticized by Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.
“In a fire emergency, it doesn’t matter what someone’s race, religion, personal relationships, or political views are – our immediate concern is saving lives. If the house belongs to a cat-owning woman who doesn’t have children, we make sure to help her feline friend escape as well.”
Winfrey stated that if women lack the ability to make decisions about their own bodies, such as having kids and nurturing them, then there’s no concept of the ‘American Dream.’
She portrayed the opposition as “desiring a return to an era marked by despair, embarrassment, and unyielding terror.”
Oprah emphasized on points Trump made during the campaign, including his statement implying that there might not be a need for voting again in four years if he wins.
The candidate in question asserted that we only need to visit the polling station once, and we’ll never have to do it again. However, I, as an independent voter, am happy to express my civic duty repeatedly because I’m an American, and that’s what many of us proudly continue to do.
Adopting my signature talk-show style, I concluded by emphasizing, “Let’s rally behind Kamala Harris,” stretching out her last name for emphasis.
For Oprah Winfrey, the event served as a heartwarming return, recalling her humble beginnings when she debuted her hit talk show on a local Chicago TV station in 1983. It expanded to a national platform three years after and continued for an impressive 25-year run, ultimately laying the foundation for a vast media empire.
“Who says you can’t go home again?” Winfrey said to a roaring crowd.
Oprah Winfrey notably endorsed Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential run, making her one of the first high-profile media figures to do so for a political candidate. She also backed Hillary Clinton in 2016, yet she did not deliver any speeches or make appearances on Clinton’s behalf, which left Clinton’s campaign team speculating about the potential impact of more active support.
Following Harris’ ascension as the first Black woman to lead the Democratic ticket, Winfrey has once more increased her involvement.
Oprah Winfrey was often mentioned as a potential contender for the 2020 presidential election, but the speculation became quite boisterous to the point where her friend and co-host on “CBS Mornings”, Gayle King, felt compelled to address it publicly.
