As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I was thrilled with the new prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It premiered on HBO in January and February 2026, and honestly, it was a breath of fresh air. It was so incredibly well-received that I think it genuinely rescued the franchise from potentially fading away. It really felt like a turning point for the whole series!
Even without the new show, the world of Game of Thrones still had plenty of potential. The third season of the prequel, House of the Dragon, arrives in June and is generating a lot of anticipation, though some viewers were disappointed with parts of Season 2. However, the new show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is being met with widespread enthusiasm, which is a welcome change.
The ‘Game of Thrones’ Franchise Has Been on the Ropes for a While

During the 2010s, Game of Thrones became a massive cultural hit – a show everyone was talking about. However, the 2019 finale proved deeply unpopular. Fans were disappointed with how the conflict against the White Walkers was resolved, with Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden change in character, and with the ultimate outcome for the Seven Kingdoms. The controversial ending continues to cast a shadow over the entire series.
House of the Dragon, a series that takes place almost 200 years before Game of Thrones, initially aimed to be a reboot and got off to a strong start. Season 1 introduced viewers to new characters like Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), and their escalating conflict captivated audiences. However, when the long-awaited war began in Season 2, the show’s momentum slowed. The plot felt drawn out, and the characters didn’t feel as interesting or well-developed compared to those in the original Game of Thrones series.
Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon faced problems when they moved away from the original stories. Game of Thrones didn’t have much choice because author George R.R. Martin hasn’t finished writing the Song of Ice and Fire books. Once the showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, ran out of source material, they had to create their own storylines, which weren’t as strong as Martin’s writing. House of the Dragon was initially based on the complete book Fire & Blood, but the second season made confusing changes, such as turning rivals Rhaenyra and Alicent into allies, deviating from the book’s plot.
I’m absolutely loving A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! It’s based on The Hedge Knight, and honestly, it feels so much more faithful to the original story than anything we’ve seen since the very beginning of Game of Thrones. And it makes sense – it’s being hailed as the best thing in the franchise in years! But it’s not just about sticking to the book. This is a different kind of Game of Thrones story, and it’s exactly what fans like me have been wanting to see.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Got Fans to Stop Worrying and Love Westeros
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a down-on-his-luck knight who’s hoping to find a lord to employ him and get him out of a life of rough sleeping. He enters a tournament hoping to prove himself to the nobility. While the story does get more complex, it’s a smaller-scale tale than Game of Thrones – the world isn’t at risk, and there isn’t a large-scale war happening.
As a huge fantasy fan, I was definitely caught up in the explosion of massive shows like The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power after Game of Thrones blew up. But honestly? Sometimes all that scale can feel… a little much. That’s why A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is such a breath of fresh air. It’s just… smaller. Instead of some world-ending crisis, we get to spend time with genuinely good people – Dunk and Egg are fantastic – and just enjoy their journey. It’s lighter, more fun, and when trouble does show up, it actually feels impactful because we’ve had time to connect with these characters. You actually care when things go wrong, and that’s a really special thing.
Because the show isn’t overly ambitious in scope, HBO can create episodes at a faster pace. Many high-budget fantasy series, like The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon, often take years between seasons. However, the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to arrive in 2027.
Like previous shows in the series, AKOTSK might encounter similar problems as it progresses. George R.R. Martin has written three Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and has plans for many more. According to showrunner Ira Parker in an interview with Polygon, he’d like to continue the show until it covers the complete story of Dunk and Egg. However, this could lead to a situation where they exhaust the available source material and need to create their own storylines.
While future projects are still to come, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has successfully reignited interest in the world of Game of Thrones, and thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer for the next installment.
