Eamonn Holmes reveals he stormed out of an interview with Mariah Carey after the ‘tired’ star arrived four hours late and took a NAP before he decided to lie down beside her

Eamonn Holmes is famous for getting straight to the point in interviews, so it’s no shock that even a major Hollywood star wouldn’t want to make him wait.

The 66-year-old broadcaster recently shared that he walked out of an interview with Mariah Carey after she arrived four hours late and then decided to take a nap instead of beginning the conversation.

Eamonn was annoyed when Mariah’s team explained her lateness by saying she was tired, as she hadn’t woken up until 9am. He found this unconvincing, pointing out he’d been awake since 4am.

The GB News personality jokingly explained that he decided to lie down on the sofa next to the interviewer so they could finish their conversation.

Mariah’s team was very upset by the decision, so Eamonn announced he was ending the interview and immediately left.

According to sources speaking with Katie Hind at the Daily Mail, Eamonn has been asked to take a break from his GB News show because of concerns about his recent on-air conduct. You can find more details about this story here.

Eamonn Holmes shared stories from his most memorable interviews during a live event in London’s Hippodrome Casino. Having worked in television for over 40 years, he spoke with Hayley Palmer about his career highlights.

Let me tell you, as someone who’s seen a lot of interviews, nothing screams unprofessional like being consistently late. I heard a story recently about a candidate scheduled for an 11 AM interview who just didn’t show. And it wasn’t a quick delay – they kept being told ‘she’ll be here, she’ll be here’ at noon, then again at one o’clock! It really sends the wrong message, and frankly, it’s incredibly disrespectful of everyone’s time.

I’d been awake since four that morning, so when this happened, I was really frustrated. I told myself that if she wasn’t here within ten minutes, I was leaving.

Eamonn explained that Mariah finally showed up four hours late. When she arrived, he said, she immediately flopped down on the chaise lounge and closed her eyes.

‘And I said ”what the f**k is going on here?”

According to reports, Mariah Carey is extremely fatigued. Sources stated she’s been awake since 9:00 AM this morning.

I told her I’d been awake since four in the morning, pointing out she hadn’t gotten up until nine. Then, I went and lay down next to her.

Eamonn explained he wouldn’t do it now that circumstances were different, and confessed he was the one who started Mariah and woke her up.

The decision caused outrage from Mariah Carey’s representatives, but he responded with a dismissive remark: ‘Mariah’s exhausted, but I’m also tired – I’ve been up even earlier. We’re both going to rest now.’

Honestly, there was so much drama leading up to this interview! I remember I just had to be direct and said, “Look, we can do this one of two ways: either we both lie down, or we both stay sitting up.” It was a bit of a standoff, but I needed to establish some ground rules!

They predicted Ms. Carey would be too ill to sit up, so I retorted that Mr. Holmes certainly wouldn’t be conducting the interview, and then I left.

Eamonn has faced several health challenges since 2021, when he dislocated his pelvis and suffered three slipped disks.

While recovering from surgery, Eamonn suffered another setback when he fell at the house he used to share with his ex-wife, Ruth Langsford, resulting in a broken shoulder.

Eamonn was recently seen out and about, just weeks after publicly sharing his health struggles. He explained that he needs assistance from carers to stand up.

On the Session 7 podcast, Eamonn shared that he’s been dealing with a health issue that has left him using a wheelchair for the past two years, which he described as a very difficult experience.

I really don’t think anyone on TV cares what I have to say. There’s nothing wrong with what we’re discussing, but I’m just unable to get out of bed right now.

Eamonn explained that he receives care throughout the day, but he can usually manage most tasks independently once he’s seated.

The former This Morning presenter emphasized the importance of health, saying ‘your health is truly your greatest asset.’ He then acknowledged that society often struggles to accept or understand people with disabilities.

As someone who’s spent years observing how life changes, I’ve learned that health is everything. I recently shared with the Sunday World that things have shifted for me – I now require the help of carers to manage my daily life. It’s a humbling experience, but it’s also a reminder to appreciate every moment and prioritize well-being.

‘Somebody dresses me in the morning, somebody undresses me at night, somebody gets my food for me.

I’m undergoing tests involving spinal injections to see if they can help restore function to my spine and legs. It’s a new and unproven procedure, and I’ll find out if it’s working next week. Honestly, this is the most difficult time I’ve ever faced, but I’m staying strong and continuing to fight.

Recently, Eamonn’s former partner, Ruth, shared that she sought therapy after their separation.

The couple, who share son Jack, separated in May 2024 after 14 years of marriage.

I was listening to Rylan Clark on BBC Radio 2, and Ruth was talking about her experience with counselling. She said it was honestly the best decision she ever made, and it really resonated with me. It’s so good to hear her share that!

A friend suggested I consider talking to their counselor because of some things that were going on in my life.

She’d previously supported me through a tough divorce. When I said I didn’t need therapy because I already knew I was upset, she gently pointed out that my feelings were far more complex than just sadness.

Honestly, this woman was really persistent. She kept at me and at me, gently ‘pecking’ at my resolve, until I just caved! I finally said, ‘Okay, fine,’ just to get some peace and quiet. Sometimes, you just need the nagging to stop, you know?

Joining this group was the best decision I ever made, and I’m still actively involved. My friends are incredibly supportive – they always have my back, no matter what I choose or how I’m feeling. They truly lift me up.

Honestly, seeing a counsellor is just…different. They don’t really know you, you know? It’s not like she tells me what to do – ever! That’s the amazing thing. She doesn’t give advice, she just… helps me see things from a new angle, makes me think for myself. It’s like she unlocks something inside me, and I figure it out. It’s incredible, really.

‘Lots of people have picked up on this saying that she said to me, which was, ‘Find your light’.

She felt overwhelmed by darkness, but encouraged me to channel my feelings of anger and sadness, to use that energy to rediscover my inner strength.
