Catherine Tate returning to Doctor Who for special project

As a seasoned Doctor Who enthusiast with decades of time vortex travel under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement about Catherine Tate returning to the show for a special project next week! The thought of Donna Noble gracing our screens once more is simply delightful and Murray Gold’s return as composer for his fourth prom is icing on the cake.

Catherine Tate is returning to Doctor Who for a special project, one happening next week.

Composer Murray Gold returns for his fourth BBC Proms concert, scheduled for Monday, August 26th. This event will air at a later date in the year. Previously seen as Donna Noble in the three 60th-anniversary specials from last year, she will be this year’s host for the show.

In a conversation with Radio Times, Gold shared the news, expressing his delight since it’s Catherine Tate who will be hosting. He considers her as a true icon of the show.

After the broadcast of the special, she sent me a kind message praising my work. Wow, she’s amazing!

Additionally, he hinted that Ncuti Gatwa would make an appearance in exclusive video segments, however, much of the accompanying music has yet to be released for sale. Consequently, he finds himself hurriedly brainstorming catchy song titles for the tracks from the special episodes and the most recent season.

He explained that this upcoming Prom won’t follow the format of a jukebox musical since attendees may not be familiar with the songs beforehand, as there will be many new compositions to discover instead.

Moreover, he promised fans that they would recognize many elements from his earlier tenure (from 2005 to 2017), along with tunes by the composer for the Jodie Whittaker era, Segun Akinola.

He mentioned, “We have a suite named after Segun Akinola, and we’ve also included some classic pieces.” He continued, explaining, “We’ve made an effort to ensure that the fans don’t feel let down by the band playing solely new songs from their latest album, which isn’t typically what people want. Instead, we aim for a seamless blend of old and new tunes.”

Regrettably, we can’t offer a sneak peek of the upcoming Christmas special because of some complex legal complications.

2024’s Doctor Who Prom will occur next week, with a broadcast scheduled for later in the year on BBC. In the United Kingdom, the main show will be aired on BBC One, while it will be available on Disney+ elsewhere. For those residing in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who can be found on BBC iPlayer.
